Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 369

“Dad, you really want to kick Sarah out? She grew up in this family. You promised she’d always be part of the Charles family. She’s just a girl… If you send her away, where is she supposed to go? The holidays are practically here. People will talk, and they’ll think she did something awful. I can’t agree to this.”

Tessa was the most upset of everyone. She pulled Sarah into a hug and shot a cold, angry look at Camilla. In Tessa’s eyes, Sarah had done nothing wrong. She had been with them for years, and of course she and Lance would get close. If anyone was to blame, it was certain people who didn’t know their place and took advantage when they shouldn’t have.

Darwin looked tired as he spoke. “That’s enough. The Charles family has taken care of her for over twenty years. Like Lance said, Sarah’s grown up. If she leaves and keeps her head down, I’m not going to let her go hungry. This is final. I’ll talk to my lawyer, settle the property she’s owed and make sure it gets transferred to her. You both should get her settled elsewhere, and soon. Remember, Lance is your son. Don’t turn your home upside down for someone who isn’t even family.”

Then Darwin turned to Lance. “And you, try to keep your personal drama out of the public eye. I don’t want everyone knowing all your messy relationship issues.”

His voice made his dislike for Camilla obvious. He didn’t give Lance a chance to reply. With his cane in hand, Darwin marched out of the private room and slammed the door hard enough that the walls shook.

But Lance didn’t care. He shouted at his father’s back, “I’m happy to! I found an amazing wife, and I want everyone to know it!”

Darwin paused for a second in the hallway but didn’t come back or argue.

The room actually got more uncomfortable after Darwin left. Tessa kept cursing Lance under her breath, then turned to try and calm Sarah down, her hands busy as she fussed over her.

Lance had already gotten what he wanted. He paid no more attention to Tessa, just took Camilla’s hand and walked away.

By now, things had gotten so awkward that Shirley wanted out, too. She picked up her bag and was about to slip away, but Sarah’s soft voice stopped her. “Tessa, I’m okay. Really. I always knew I wasn’t really part of the Charles family and that one day I’d have to leave. Still, even if I go, you’ll always be like a mom to me. I’ll visit when I can. Please don’t worry… You should go rest, okay? I want to talk to Shirley for a while.”

Sarah’s kindness only made Tessa feel worse. She hugged Sarah tightly, not wanting to let go, but also not wanting to make things harder for her. In the end, Tessa left the room, turning around again and again on her way out, her eyes lingering on Sarah.

Now only Shirley and Sarah were left. Shirley kept her head down and felt out of place, her heart full of unease.

Sarah walked right over like nothing had happened and slipped her arm through Shirley’s. “Shirley, why won’t you look at me? Are you not my friend anymore?”
