As she thought about it, any doubt about Sarah completely faded away. She hesitated for a moment, then asked, “So what are you going to do now, Sarah?”
A shadow passed over Sarah’s face. “Honestly, I have no idea. Right now, I just have to move out of the Charles family's house.”
She looked so lost and hurt that Shirley’s last bit of suspicion disappeared. “I’m really sorry, Sarah. This is all my fault. If I hadn’t acted on impulse, you wouldn’t be getting kicked out. If you have nowhere else to go, or if you just feel lonely, you can come stay with me any time.”
Sarah quietly agreed and thanked Shirley again, her eyes briefly flickering with a strange light.
Shirley wasn’t the sharpest, but Sarah didn’t need her to be. There were some things Sarah couldn’t say herself, so she’d just let Shirley handle them for her.
It didn’t take long for the story of Sarah getting thrown out of the Charles family to spread everywhere. Even the Carter family, who already had their hands full, heard about it.
Calvin called Barnard and Davina into his office, his tone harsh. “You two have seen what’s happening. Camilla has really won over that guy from the Charles family. He even kicked out their adopted daughter for her. I don’t care about your old grudges. From now on, stay in line. If I find out either of you is messing with Camilla, you’ll be dealing with me. The Carter family isn’t what it used to be. We can’t afford any more trouble, got it?”
Calvin’s temper had been terrible lately, and Davina was always on edge when he was around. She rushed to agree.
Barnard just lowered his head, not answering right away. Deep down, he was still filled with doubt and a bit of bitterness.
Camilla had such a messy past. Did Lance really not care? Barnard just couldn’t believe Lance would accept her like nothing ever happened.
Calvin glared at Barnard again. “This goes double for you. Don’t get involved with Camilla. She has nothing to do with this family anymore, and she’s not someone you want to mess with.”
Davina nudged Barnard with her elbow. “Barnard, Dad’s right. Let’s just leave Camilla alone from now on.”
Barnard glanced at Davina, then finally looked at Calvin. “Dad, have you figured out how to fix the trouble at the company?”
They were running out of money, a few promising projects had been snatched up by the competition, and shareholders were losing it. Some were even thinking of selling out. Fixing things was not going to be easy.
“Dad, if we want to save the Carter Group, Lance needs to back off. We’re out of options. This is our last shot. Don’t you think so?” Barnard pressed.
Calvin took a long time to consider, but seeing how desperate things had become, he eventually nodded. “Barnard, this is the last chance for our family. Don’t let me down again.”
There was still a lot for Calvin to handle at the company, so he didn’t linger. He quickly went back to his study. Davina waited until they were alone before asking quietly, “Barnard, what exactly are you planning? Can you tell me? Are you really just getting revenge, or is it something else…”
Barnard barely looked at her. “Davina, don’t start imagining things. Camilla brought the Carter Group to this point, so of course I have to fix it.”
“But…”
“Davina, aren’t you still in touch with that friend of Sarah’s? Can you help me set up a meeting?”
Davina hadn’t really trusted Barnard before, but once he asked for her help, her concerns faded. She didn’t ask more questions and hurried off to do what he asked.
