Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 371

When Davina set out to cause trouble, she was fast. That night, Barnard ended up sitting across from Shirley and Sarah.

Shirley was calm as ever, but Sarah looked a mess. Her eyes were red and puffy, and she curled up next to Shirley, looking fragile and lost, almost heartbreakingly so.

Barnard hadn't even spoken yet when Sarah beat him to it. Her voice was chilly, not matching her delicate appearance at all. "Barnard, I already know what you’re after. Shirley told me everything. Just give up. Even if I’ve been kicked out of the Charles family, I won’t help you do anything to hurt Lance.

"But you do look pretty pitiful. I get what you want. If you tell me everything you know, maybe I’ll talk to Tessa for you. I could get her to let the Carter family off the hook.

"And don’t worry, even if I’m not the Charleses’ adopted daughter anymore, I’m still Tessa’s favorite. If I ask, she’ll definitely help your family out."

She said it all with this righteous confidence, as if she was doing the noble thing.

Barnard listened carefully. On the surface, Sarah sounded like she was just protecting Lance. But if she really wanted to defend him, she would have just warned Barnard off and walked away, not stuck around for more details. That alone gave her away.

Barnard could spot the hypocrisy a mile away. Sarah acted like an angel, but everything about her was calculating. She wanted to pull dirty tricks and still keep a good reputation. Barnard had pulled the same moves back when he lied to Camilla. He knew the type.

He didn’t call her out. He decided to play along. "Didn’t know you were so generous, Sarah. Looks like I went to the wrong person for this."

Sarah looked right at him. "Just tell me what you know. I don’t want you holding anything over Lance ever again. If your family’s in trouble, I’ll see what I can do."

It wasn’t like it mattered who ruined that relationship, him or Sarah. Barnard didn’t hesitate. He told her everything, how he set up Camilla, where the kid came from, even what he knew about Lean.

Sarah’s expression turned even darker.

So that was the truth. That’s how the kid ended up there.

Barnard really thought he had the upper hand, but the man he was hiding wasn’t even Jasper’s real father.

Not that it mattered. Sarah was already planning how to use this information. At the right time, she’d make it all public. Camilla would never get near the Charles family again.

Barnard glanced at her. "Sarah, that’s everything I know. About the Carter family—"

Camilla frowned and, for once, didn’t just agree. "You don’t like me, Darwin. Honestly, on a day like this, I thought you’d be glad if I stayed away. Wasn’t that what you wanted?"

He snorted. "Quick with words, aren’t you? If you cared so much for tradition, you’d think about whether it’s right to keep Lance away from his family tonight."

He nodded toward the car. "Well? I came to get you in person. Are you getting in or what?"

His tone was frosty, but the driver stepped forward and opened the back door. Camilla stayed put, pulling out her phone. "Sorry, Darwin. I already promised Lance I’d spend the evening with him. Even if you want me to come, I should ask him first."

"No need for that. I already sent someone to pick him up," Darwin cut her off. He signaled the driver, who handed her a tablet. On the screen, a GPS tracker showed Jasper’s smartwatch ticking closer to the Charles family estate.

Darwin wouldn’t bother lying about something like this. Camilla pushed away her doubts and got in the car.

The whole ride, Darwin just sat there with a stony face. Sometimes he glanced at her when he thought she wouldn’t notice. Camilla knew he disliked her and didn’t bother making conversation. She just stared out the window, watching the city lights flicker and the world slip by in silence.
