Her already slender frame looked even more fragile swimming in the oversized hospital gown. As she walked toward Lance, her steps were visibly unsteady.
Tessa noticed her instantly and rushed forward to support her, her voice thick with worry. "Sarah, you were supposed to be resting! Why did you come down here?"
Sarah's gaze fixed entirely on Lance, her eyes still red and swollen. "Tessa, I knew he wouldn't come upstairs to see me.
If you keep demanding it of him, it will only damage your relationship further. I can't bear to see the two of you fighting because of me.
When it comes to my own affairs, I'd rather explain things to him myself."
Her tone was incredibly soft, every word dripping with self-sacrificing understanding. It made Tessa's heart ache with pity, and when she glared back at Lance, her resentment toward him only grew.
Sarah continued, addressing Lance directly. "I overheard a lot of what you just said to Tessa. I never knew my living with the Charles family disgusted you so much.
Even though some things were out of my control, I still want to apologize to you.
But please, let me be selfish just this once. Tessa raised me for over two decades. She's my family. I can't bear to cut ties with her completely.
If you truly hate me that much, then I'll just give you my life to make up for it, okay?"
Her words were a desperate plea, but she spoke loud enough for every passerby in the lobby to hear.
She was publicly backing him into a corner. If Lance said a single wrong word, he would instantly become the villain who drove her to suicide.
Camilla stepped forward. "Sarah, you can drop the pathetic victim act. Lance isn't interested in competing with you for Tessa's affection.
We only came here to tell you that whatever love he didn't get from his family, I will give him. So please, stop harassing him."
"What is that supposed to mean, Camilla?" Tessa demanded, her voice rising in panic. "Are you making decisions for him now? Are you trying to make him cut ties with us?"
Camilla didn't back down. "Yes, Tessa. Since you've withheld every ounce of motherly love from him his entire life, you don't get the right to boss him around now.
As for your adopted daughter, no matter how innocent or pitiful she acts, that doesn't mean Lance is obligated to tolerate her.
If there's nothing else, I'm taking him home."
"You... you have a lot of nerve!" Tessa fumed. "Since when do you get to dictate the affairs of the Charles family?"
Sarah turned a wounded look toward Lance. "You heard what she just said. Are you really going to let her speak for you?
