Darwin didn't stay at the hospital much longer. In the end, Tessa was the only one left by Sarah's side.
The paternity test results arrived first thing the next morning. Staring at the bold letters confirming a positive biological match, Darwin looked thoroughly dazed.
It was Lance's son.
It was actually his flesh and blood. No wonder—no wonder when he first saw the boy, even through his cloud of prejudice, he had felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity.
That boy was a true descendant of the Charles family.
Which meant all the vicious rumors about Camilla and Jasper were pure slander.
Camilla had been with Lance over five years ago.
The truth crashed over him like a tidal wave, leaving his mind in utter turmoil.
When the butler delivered the report, he also brought Nichol into the room. "Lance previously had Nichol run a paternity test," the butler explained. "He has something to tell you."
The study doors clicked shut, and the atmosphere in the room instantly grew heavy. Darwin fixed a dark, penetrating stare on the doctor.
"What exactly did Lance tell you back then?" Darwin demanded.
"At the time, Lance said that regardless of the actual outcome, there was only one result he wanted to see. He even paid me off. Honestly, I assumed Jasper wasn't his.
But when I ran the test, the results proved they were a biological match.
I thought I'd made a mistake, so I ran it again. The outcome was identical.
I figured I had just misunderstood what Lance wanted. But later, Sarah tracked me down. She kept fishing for information, insinuating that Jasper wasn't his.
I had the absolute proof right in front of me, so I couldn't just let her spout nonsense. We got into an argument, and I ended up giving her the test results."
Ever since Nichol saw Darwin's men at the hospital requesting a new test, he realized something was terribly wrong. Terrified of withholding information, he spilled every detail of what had happened that day.
The moment Sarah's name was mentioned, Darwin's expression darkened dangerously.
"And then?" Darwin pressed. "Why was I never informed of this?"
Having ruthlessly navigated the corporate world for decades, Darwin was incredibly sharp. Even before Nichol had arrived, he had pieced it together. Knowing Lance's arrogant personality, if he had known for sure Jasper was his son, he would have paraded it everywhere. He would have marched straight into the Charles Estate just to rub it in Darwin's face.
The fact that Lance hadn't done so meant he still believed the boy wasn't his.
