Tessa shoved her with such violent force that Camilla stumbled backward.
Regaining her balance, Camilla caught Tessa's wrists and pushed them away, putting a safe distance between them. "Tessa, please calm down. Take a breath and tell me what happened."
"Calm down? How am I supposed to calm down?" Tessa screamed, her face flushed with rage. "My Sarah is bleeding out in an operating room! She didn't do anything to deserve this! Why is she paying the price for the mess between you and your ex-husband?"
Taking in the volatile emotions of both families, the pieces clicked into place for Camilla. The two patients in surgery were Barnard and Sarah. Based on Tessa's fury, they had been in a car crash together.
Though she didn't know the exact details, Camilla could easily guess that those two being in the same car in the middle of the night meant they had been plotting something malicious. But with everyone currently on the brink of a breakdown, now was not the time to point fingers.
Compared to Tessa's explosive meltdown, the Carter family was eerily quiet. They had no idea why Barnard was with Sarah. Tessa's wrath was entirely directed at Camilla simply because Barnard was her ex-husband, making it guilty by association. There was no concrete proof yet that Barnard and Sarah had been targeting Camilla.
Instead of engaging in a screaming match with Tessa, Camilla turned to a nearby nurse. "What's the situation? How are the patients?"
The nurse looked visibly shaken. "The woman is in stable condition, but the man suffered catastrophic trauma. His legs were crushed. The lead surgeon just warned us that amputation is highly likely."
The words struck the hallway like a lightning bolt. Laura's face went deathly pale. "W-what did you just say? Amputation?"
The nurse, fresh out of training and terrified by the high-profile families in front of her, stammered a frantic reassurance. "Please, ma'am, calm down. It's not absolute yet. We have to wait for the final assessment. A miracle could still happen—"
Laura clutched her chest, her sobbing turning into a dry, choking gasp. "How... how could this happen? He was perfectly fine an hour ago. You people don't know what you're doing! Where is Magee? Yes, call Magee! He's the best trauma surgeon in the country. Get him to operate on my son!"
"Dr. Magee is exceptional," the nurse admitted nervously, "but he transferred to Valdoria for an advanced fellowship months ago. He can't get back in time."
Laura, completely panicked, latched onto Calvin's words. "But honey, he just got out of the wreck. Moving him now could kill him—"
"What do you know about medicine?" Calvin snapped, silencing her. "Magee is a genius. He's the only one who can fix this. Leaving Barnard here with these amateurs is a death sentence. We are going to Valdoria."
Laura, always submissive to her husband's judgment, didn't argue further. She simply grabbed the nurse's arm, begging her to use the strongest medications available to keep her son alive for the journey.
Just as the Carters believed they had secured their escape, Camilla's sharp voice cut through the chaos.
"Calvin, Laura," she said, her tone dripping with ice. "Are you really trying to use a hospital transfer to run away from your responsibilities? Let's not forget, Sarah was severely injured in your son's car. Before you flee the city, don't you think you owe the Charles family a thorough explanation?"
