Calvin's desperate calculations shattered against Camilla's blunt words. He glared at her, looking as though he wanted to tear her apart just to vent his frustration.
Camilla met his gaze without an ounce of hesitation. Her eyes were calm, devoid of any ripples of emotion.
He wanted to use this chaos to slip away, but she was never going to let that happen.
Until they figured out exactly why Sarah was in Barnard's car, Tessa would pin all the blame on her. Camilla had to wait for Barnard to wake up and force a direct confrontation.
Prompted by Camilla's sharp observation, Tessa snapped back to reality and directed her fury at Calvin. "Barnard really is scheming, isn't he? Your son gets Sarah severely injured, and now you're itching to run away. What's the matter? Does he know something that makes him feel guilty?
"Let me make one thing crystal clear," Tessa continued, her voice trembling with rage. "I raised Sarah myself. She is no different from my own flesh and blood. If you don't give us a proper explanation today, none of you are leaving this hospital."
Calvin's face drained of color. He shot Camilla another venomous glare. If she hadn't opened her mouth, they could have quietly transferred Barnard to another facility. Now, they were trapped here, forced to deal with a furious Tessa.
Laura was on the verge of a total breakdown. "What could we possibly know? My son is lying in a hospital bed right now! You heard the doctor—Barnard's injuries are worse. He might lose a leg!
"He is my son. I carried him for nine months. If I had known there was any danger, do you honestly think I would have let him take such a risk?
"Tessa, stop making these baseless accusations!"
Even in her defense, Laura's voice was soft and weak, lacking any real bite. But her genuine maternal anguish managed to strike a chord, softening Tessa's aggressive stance just a fraction. Still, Tessa remained stubborn. "The fact remains that Sarah was in your son's car when the accident happened. Once I get to the bottom of this, I will not show any mercy to the person who hurt her."
As she delivered that final threat, Tessa's gaze shifted coldly toward Camilla.
In Tessa's mind, Sarah's injuries had to be connected to Camilla. After all, Barnard was Camilla's ex-husband.
Just as the two families reached a bitter stalemate, the operating room doors swung open. A medical team wheeled Sarah out into the corridor.
Thick bandages wrapped around her head, obscuring most of her face. Her wrist was immobilized in a splint. She looked incredibly fragile and pitiful.
