"He said Camilla wasn't answering his calls, and he wanted me to help him get in touch with her," Sarah murmured softly.
"I refused, but Barnard forced me into his car. He insisted that I go with him to meet Camilla.
"On the way, we ran into people collecting debts for the Carter family. Barnard panicked, the car crashed into the guardrail, and we both went over the edge.
"Tessa, honestly, Camilla is innocent in all this. You can't blame her. If anyone is to blame, it's me. I was useless. I couldn't calm Barnard down. This is all my fault."
"If it isn't her fault, then whose is it?" Tessa snapped. "Sarah, stop taking the blame for everything! You're the real victim here. You did absolutely nothing wrong, yet you're the one suffering because of her psychotic ex-husband."
Tessa patted Sarah soothingly before whipping her head around to glare at Camilla, her eyes vicious. "Do you have anything to say for yourself, you menace?
"Sarah never did anything to you! How far are you willing to go to ruin her life?
"She is the daughter of this family. We raised her. It wasn't enough that you convinced Lance to kick her out of the house—now you won't even let her live in peace?
"How can a woman be so utterly toxic?"
Tessa lunged forward, raising her hand to grab Camilla, but Camilla swiftly stepped back, dodging the attack. Ignoring the older woman's hysterics, Camilla walked straight to the foot of Sarah's hospital bed.
"Sarah," Camilla asked coldly, "since when are you and Barnard so close? He couldn't find me, so he decided to contact you? Funny, I wasn't aware you two were communicating behind my back."
"I... I wasn't talking to him!"
Sarah's voice trembled. "You have people guarding you at home and at the office, but I'm in the hospital all alone. Barnard probably heard I was staying here and thought he could use me to get to you.
"Camilla, are you seriously blaming me right now? I was dragged into this mess because of you! I didn't hold it against you, so how can you interrogate me like this?"
Her eyes were red, her hand clutching her chest as if her heart were breaking. She made Camilla look like an unrepentant villain.
"Think about your own story for a second, Sarah. Does it make any sense?" Camilla replied smoothly. "Even if Tessa wasn't with you at the time, this hospital is packed with staff and nurses. If you didn't leave with him willingly, all you had to do was scream. Someone would have stopped him. There's no way he could have dragged you out of here against your will.
Having established her own innocence, Camilla shot a cool glance toward Calvin.
Sarah's narrative was currently setting the Carters up for a massive kidnapping charge. Camilla knew Calvin would never let that slide.
Calvin already loathed Camilla with a burning passion, but right now, he had no choice but to piggyback on her logic. "Tessa, I know my own son. He and Camilla lost their spark a long time ago, which is why they divorced. I do not believe for one second that he sought Sarah out just to see Camilla. There's definitely more to this story. Let's wait until Barnard wakes up."
He had just witnessed exactly how precious Sarah was to the Charles family.
When Barnard woke up, Calvin would make sure his son deflected the blame entirely. The Carters absolutely could not afford to take the fall for kidnapping the beloved Charles daughter.
As for that adopted girl... she played the innocent victim perfectly, but she clearly had a pitch-black soul. Trying to crush the Carters under her heel the second she opened her mouth? She was definitely hiding something.
They were all playing the same vicious game, and Calvin could see right through her disguise.
