Barnard knew Davina was utterly useless, which was why he never breathed a word of his actual business to her.
As long as he kept bringing in loads of cash, she was blissfully happy. She couldn't care less about how the sausage was made.
Her staggering ignorance only fueled Calvin's fury. He turned sharply to Laura. "Stop crying. Take her outside for a walk. I need a private word with Barnard."
Calvin was keenly aware that this was not a conversation for Davina's ears.
Laura quickly ushered Davina out the door. Once they were alone, Calvin stared hard at his son. "Barnard, give it to me straight. What exactly did you do? Is there blood on your hands?"
Barnard laughed mockingly. "You seem pretty familiar with all of this, Dad. Is that because you've done this 'kind of thing' too? Do you have blood on your hands?"
Since working closely with Clement, Barnard had easily deduced the true nature of his father's underground dealings.
They were both neck-deep in filth. Barnard didn't feel Calvin had any moral high ground left to lecture him from.
"I didn't have a choice!" Calvin hissed. "Barnard, stop fighting me on this. Tell me what you're involved in, and we can figure out if there's any way to salvage this.
"You know damn well those people are psychopaths. They're ruthless criminals. Getting involved with them is a death sentence. I'm your father—of course I want you to be safe."
The raw desperation in Calvin's voice finally softened Barnard's defenses just a fraction. But instead of spilling his own secrets, he flipped the script. "Dad, if you know so much about how dangerous they are, why did you get involved with them? Before you interrogate me, shouldn't you come clean about your own mess?"
Realizing that Barnard was likely past the point of no return, and that they were both walking the same dark path, Calvin decided to drop the act. He took a heavy breath. "This all started back when your mother and I were younger.
"We were traveling back from abroad, passing through the border of Silvania. Our car broke down right in the middle of nowhere.
"A group of guys showed up, offering to fix the car in exchange for delivering a piece of cargo for them.
"They were heavily armed. It was obvious they were bad news. To stay alive, your mother and I didn't dare say no.
"Once the car was running, they loaded the cargo into our trunk and even sent one of their guys to ride along.
"We kept our mouths shut, just wanting to make the drop and go home. But during the hand-off, I accidentally caught a glimpse inside...
"And I realized the bag wasn't full of goods. It was a person. A cop!"
Even though it had happened over a decade ago, recounting the memory still made Calvin visibly shudder.
