Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 485

"These are some of our core assets, the things you'll need during this period. Keep them secure. I'll leave my secretary here to assist you," Clement continued.

With so much trouble brewing, Clement would never have agreed to leave Valdoria if it weren't absolutely unavoidable.

Now, despite his unease, he had no choice but to delegate his responsibilities.

His secretary had been with him for years and was trustworthy, but the man was too indecisive to take charge in a crisis. Clement couldn't leave everything solely in his hands.

Barnard, on the other hand, was ruthless and decisive enough.

After Barnard took the fall for him in front of Mike that day, Clement's trust in him had risen significantly. Yet, Barnard always seemed to lose his head when it came to women. Whenever romance was involved, he tended to mess things up.

Leaving his secretary behind to keep an eye on Barnard was the best compromise Clement could come up with.

Thinking of recent events, a dark shadow crossed Clement's eyes.

At the end of the day, that woman was useless. He had gone through so much trouble to pass the message along, but she acted recklessly. If she had managed to eliminate Camilla directly, he wouldn't be dealing with all these headaches now.

Barnard caught the shifting expressions on Clement's face but didn't pry. He simply agreed to all of Clement's demands.

After going over a few more details, Clement left. Once he was out of earshot, Laura pushed the door open, her face etched with fear. "Barnard, did that man just assign you to do more of those terrible things? Listen to me, let's find a chance to run. I heard him on the phone earlier; he's packing his bags to go abroad. We should leave too, run far away. Please?"

Calvin had lost his life dealing with these people, and the things Barnard was doing were even dirtier than what Calvin had done. How could a mother like Laura not be terrified?

A manic gleam appeared in Barnard's eyes. His lips curled into a bizarre, sinister smile that made Laura's heart race. She felt as if she barely recognized her own son.

Barnard looked down at the core documents Clement had left him, the madness in his eyes intensifying. "Run? Why would I run? The Williams Group is about to be mine. I can have whatever I want. Why would I run when such a perfect opportunity just fell into my lap?"

Laura's fear grew deeper.

She stared at him in disbelief, as if looking at a lunatic. "Barnard, what are you saying? They do things that destroy lives. What do you want with a company like that? We should be trying to get as far away from them as possible. Why are you throwing yourself into the fire?"

"Get away?" Barnard scoffed. "This is a gift from above. Why would I throw it away? Besides, I've already crossed the line. There's no turning back now, so why not use this chance to climb higher? Enough. I'll make my own decisions. You wouldn't understand even if I explained it. Right now, you just need to do one thing: keep Davina in check and make sure she stops bothering me."
