“I gave her plenty of chances. She brought this entirely upon herself. Go back and tell her that if she truly understands what she did wrong, she can sit quietly in there and reflect on it,” Tessa said coldly.
Shirley hadn't expected Tessa’s attitude to be so unyielding this time.
In the past, whenever she was around Sarah, she had only ever seen Tessa catering to the girl's every whim.
When Sarah had begged her for help, Shirley thought it would be a simple favor—just passing a message along to Tessa.
But after her calls to Tessa went unanswered time and time again, Shirley finally realized something was off, though she hadn't paid it much mind.
Until now...
The blunt rejection felt like a slap to the face, leaving her cheeks burning.
Yet, remembering the promise she had made to Sarah, Shirley bit the bullet and pressed on. “Tessa, do you really not care about her health at all? She’s always been fragile. If you leave her in that prison for five years, she might not...”
“That’s enough. I've already looked into it. The facilities are perfectly fine. Even if she stays there for five years, it’s not going to kill her,” Tessa interrupted.
Normally, hearing those words would have stirred her pity for Sarah. But this time, her mind drifted to Lance.
When Lance was just a little boy, she had thrown him out of the house for Sarah's sake, leaving him to freeze and starve in the snow, nearly costing him his life.
Thinking back on it now sent a cold shiver down Tessa's spine.
In comparison, Sarah was simply paying the price for her own actions. There was nothing to feel sorry for.
Shirley was still blocking the doorway, her expression conflicted. Tessa quickly lost her patience. “Shirley, if there’s nothing else, please step aside. Don't waste everyone's time.”
Shirley’s gaze shifted to Camilla. In the end, she decided to speak up for her friend's perceived injustice. “Tessa, are you abandoning her because of Camilla? Is it because you've accepted her that you're cutting ties with Sarah?”
Tessa’s face flashed with irritation at Shirley’s audacity. She suddenly found Sarah's friend incredibly obnoxious and troublesome.
“I don't think that is any of your business,” Tessa snapped. “As for Camilla, perhaps you haven't heard the news. The old man has already chosen her as the heir to The Charles Group. Right now, our entire family relies on Camilla. I didn't choose her; the company chose her. Is there anything about that you still don't understand?”
Pure shock washed over Shirley’s face. The harsh reality of the situation made her realize how absurd her attempt had been. She finally understood that there was no swaying Tessa this time.
