After Camilla finished speaking, the couple exchanged a look, their eyes flickering with unease.
The woman said, “Let us talk things over for a moment.”
“Of course. If there’s anything I haven’t thought of, feel free to let me know,” Camilla replied.
The couple stepped out right away. As soon as they were gone, Barnard gave Camilla a worried glance. “Camilla, are you sure this will work? You’re offering them jobs and a team… I still think my five million was more straightforward.”
“You’re missing the point, Barnard. What I’m offering isn’t just about money. It’s about sincerity and goodwill,” Camilla explained.
She had considered everything the couple might need. Their daughter’s treatment, any future care or physical therapy, school arrangements, and even work and housing for the parents. She knew that when something so unexpected hit a normal family, it could destroy them completely. She just wanted to help however possible, patching up every part she could.
She could see that these two were decent people. Maybe a little tough, but not greedy. If she could actually help them fix their daughter’s issues, she trusted they’d make the right choice.
Almost ten minutes passed before the couple came back in, one after the other. The man still looked uneasy. “Is everything you promised really going to happen?”
“If you’re worried, I can call my lawyer and have them come draft an agreement right now. We can sign on the spot if you like,” Camilla offered.
The couple traded another glance. The woman nodded. “Alright, we’ll do it your way. As long as Elaine gets better, I don’t want to drag this any longer. I just have one more thing…that nanny was awful. I want her certification revoked, so she can’t hurt anyone else.”
That wasn’t difficult for Camilla. Davina had already clung to Barnard, and she wasn’t planning to work as a nanny again.
Camilla agreed right away.
Barnard, seeing hope at last, immediately called Aaron to arrange for a lawyer.
The paperwork was printed out quickly. Once both sides had signed, the woman looked at Camilla. She hesitated, then seemed to make up her mind. “Ma’am, there’s something I’d like to talk to you about in private. Would you mind stepping outside with me?”
With all the main things settled, Camilla had no reason to refuse. She followed the woman out.
They stopped in a quiet corner. The woman spoke up. “My name’s Bonnie. I can see you really mean what you say. The nanny who caused all this was just working in your house, this whole thing isn’t your fault, but you’ve still been so thoughtful about Elaine. My husband and I truly appreciate it. To be honest, I almost didn’t want to accept your offer, but Elaine really does need better treatment, so I can only… go along.”
With everything wrapped up, Bonnie and her husband dropped the lawsuit.
The storm of online gossip started fading away.
Afterward, Camilla called Calvin to give him a quick update. This time, Calvin finally sounded satisfied and even had Laura shower Camilla with praise over the phone.
Camilla barely listened. She turned to Barnard and gave him a cold warning. “My mom’s situation still isn’t clear. Don’t let anything like this happen again.”
Barnard agreed on the spot, saying he’d drive Camilla to the hospital. She refused.
She took a taxi by herself. Just as she arrived, she heard Elise had woken up, and was out of ICU and in a regular room.
Camilla pushed the door open and saw her mother lying in bed, lips pale against the sheets.
“Mom, how are you feeling? Is there anywhere that still hurts?” Camilla hurried over, worried, and checked on her.
