Elise shook her head. “I’m fine, Camilla. But you… what happened between you and Barnard?”
“Mom, what are you talking about? We’re fine,” Camilla replied.
Elise shook her head again, not buying it for a second. “Don’t lie to me, Camilla. The nanny already told me everything. You packed up and left with Jasper? Why would you do that? Barnard has always treated you so well. Our whole family owes him so much. How could you be so stubborn? Fighting with him over something so minor? You shouldn’t be here. Go home, move your things back, and don’t upset Barnard anymore.”
She grabbed Camilla’s wrist, her whole body tense with emotion.
With those words, Camilla finally understood. It wasn’t the drama at the hospital that caused Elise to faint. It was something Davina said.
Elise had always wanted her to get along with Barnard, always carried that guilt towards the Carter family, and every time they met, she’d remind Camilla to take care of Barnard. Now Davina had run to her and stirred things up. No wonder Elise was so upset.
The realization made Camilla so angry she almost couldn’t stand it. If she could, she’d tear Davina apart.
“Camilla, are you even listening? Back when you needed to pay tuition, when I needed help with medical bills, Barnard stepped up for us every single time. Marrying him was the luckiest thing that ever happened to you. He treats you well in every way. If you keep fighting with him, you’re just being ungrateful.” Elise kept going, her voice nagging and relentless.
Camilla’s silence just made Elise more agitated. “I’m talking to you, Camilla! Do you hear me at all? What’s going through your head?”
“Mom, it’s not what you think. I moved out because Jasper’s about to start school. The new place is closer to his preschool. And—”
“That’s not a good reason. Couples don’t just live apart. Your family even has a driver. You don't need to take Jasper yourself. How could you make this kind of decision without talking it through? I don’t need you here. Go home, pack up, move back, and stop giving Barnard a hard time.”
Elise’s face turned stern as she started pushing Camilla out, refusing to hear any more excuses.
At that moment, the hospital room door opened. Barnard stepped in with Davina. Seeing them together made Camilla’s face go cold. “Didn’t I tell you not to bring her here to see my mom?”
“Camilla, Davina came here on purpose to thank you,” Barnard said. “She felt bad after hearing about your mom and wanted to come apologize. She—”
“Apologize?” Camilla cut him off. “So, Davina, you don’t mind coming out with me for a little chat then, right?”
“The nurse can take care of me. That’s enough. Camilla, you and Barnard should go together. And remember what I said. When you get home, move back in. Don’t upset Barnard,” Elise said.
Camilla answered her with a quiet yes.
The moment they stepped out of the hospital, Camilla stopped and blocked Davina’s path. “I didn’t realize your mouth was so big, Davina. Just had to run to my mom and tell her everything, right?”
“Camilla, what are you saying? Did I do something wrong?” Davina asked, her voice all soft and innocent.
Camilla didn’t even bother to answer. She raised her hand and slapped Davina hard across the face. The sound echoed down the hospital hallway before anyone could react.
Davina looked at Camilla, stunned, holding her cheek.
“That’s just a warning,” Camilla told her coldly. “Try running to my mom again with your nonsense, and next time, I won’t just stop at your mouth.”
