She finalized a few details of the treatment plan with Magee, then headed downstairs with Lance to pay the medical bills. Just as they stepped out of the room, a nurse stopped them. "Camilla, it's terrible! Zack Lennox's wife went into distress this morning, and her mother-in-law is causing a massive scene downstairs. The press caught wind of it and is swarming the lobby. You should probably leave through the back door."
Tanner's hospital room was under heavy police protection.
The hospital staff, terrified of any mishaps, had rushed over to warn them.
Camilla's already restless gaze turned somber with irritation.
Hide?
Tanner was still here. Where could they possibly hide?
As long as this problem wasn't dealt with, these people would keep swarming them like relentless flies.
Camilla had already experienced this suffocating feeling with Davina and the Blair family. In a way, Zack's wife and Davina's relatives were cut from the same cloth.
Camilla turned to Lance. "Get in touch with Mahoney. I'll go down and see what's happening."
"I'm coming with you, Camilla," Dahlia said, keeping pace with her.
The two followed the nurse out of the elevator, only to see a gray-haired woman sitting in the middle of the hospital lobby, slapping her thighs and crying. Her theatrics were eerily similar to Davina's mother.
A large crowd had already gathered around her, and reporters had shoved their cameras and microphones right in her face.
The woman's piercing wails echoed as if they could tear the roof off the hospital. Several doctors were trying to calm her down, but to no avail.
From a distance, Camilla could hear her screaming. "It's a tragedy! An absolute tragedy! My son was just a regular employee. What do his boss's crimes have to do with him?
"He's the only man left to support our family. My poor daughter-in-law is pregnant. Eight months pregnant! She was begging them desperately with tears in her eyes.
"These people have hearts of stone! They just stood there and watched my pregnant daughter-in-law collapse in tears!
She slumped against the floor, completely abandoning any sense of dignity. Her determination to throw a tantrum was incredibly headache-inducing.
They had clearly coordinated their story beforehand. Whenever Zack was mentioned, they deflected all the blame onto his boss.
They were trying to use this ridiculous narrative to pull Zack out of the mud.
Dahlia was so furious she could barely breathe. "You brought this upon yourselves! Your son worked for that monster for over a decade. He has his hands deep in so many horrific crimes, and he's getting exactly what he deserves. Stop preying on the weak! If you really have a grievance, go cry in front of the police station. What's the point of tormenting the victims' families here?"
Martha continued to sob, making sure to ask the nearby police and bystanders to judge the situation. Camilla cleared her throat and interrupted the farce. "I've already called the police. Your son has been at the station for two days. Whatever he did or didn't do is already on the record.
"A hospital is a place for healing, not a stage for your grandstanding.
"If you truly believe you're innocent, then come with me to the police station right now. We can review the case files and the interrogation logs together.
"Ever since the drug syndicate was exposed, the police have been heavily promoting legal awareness. Since our friends from the media are all here, why don't we do a live interview about your son to educate the public? Do you have the guts?"
