Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 96

They had only met a handful of times, and already her son was completely on Team Lance. Camilla’s heart twisted a little just watching it.

Lance reached over and ruffled Jasper’s hair, then slid onto the sofa next to him. “If Jasper likes hanging out with me this much, guess I better come over more often.”

Seeing Jasper and Lance getting along so naturally made Camilla pause. “Lance, do you actually like kids?”

“They’re alright. Depends on the kid, honestly,” Lance replied, vague as always.

“You never thought about settling down? Having your own kids? You’re so patient, and you’re so good with Jasper. If you ever—”

“Miss Hedgehog... aren't you getting a bit chatty?” Lance broke in, frowning.

Camilla realized she was overstepping and quickly apologized, then went quiet.

After dinner, Lance helped carry Jasper out to the car. Once Camilla had driven off, Dane came up, holding a book. “Lance, looks like Jasper forgot his book. Want me to send it back?”

“No need. I’ll just invite them over again sometime,” Lance said.

Dane eyed him with an odd look. “I never knew you liked kids this much. Are you—?”

“Dane, serious question. If I went after her, what are my chances?” Lance asked, like he was just talking about the weather.

“Who? Camilla?” Dane blinked, then groaned. “Let’s not even start on that. Camilla isn’t even divorced yet. Do you know what this makes you?”

Lance raised his eyebrows, giving Dane a sideways look. “The competition, obviously. I’m just helping a gorgeous rose escape from a broken wall. Is that so wrong?”

Only Lance could make hitting on someone else’s wife sound noble. Dane’s mouth twitched, speechless. No wonder Darwin had called the other day, telling him to keep watch—Lance really did have bigger plans.

“And taking advantage when she’s vulnerable? You know what that’s called?” Dane tried again.

“Side guy, whatever. I’m not worried about reputation. She means more to me than my good name ever could,” Lance said, stretching and ignoring Dane's dumbfounded face as he pulled out his phone.

“Miss Hedgehog, you left something. Don’t forget to pick it up,” he said.

“But I really thought—” Davina started.

“Relax. Camilla’s not that calm,” Barnard said. “She’s been threatening divorce these past few days, but she’s got nothing on me. If it was really her, do you think she’d miss such a golden opportunity? If she wanted proof for the divorce, or if she was jealous, she’d definitely have stopped.”

In the old days, Camilla might have hesitated, even thought about stopping to snap a picture. But now, she was already working with Lance. With the access he provided, getting dirt on Barnard would be easy. There was no need to wreck Jasper’s good mood just to catch Barnard out.

Even so, Barnard couldn’t shake his unease. After a minute, he pulled out his phone and called Camilla, trying to suss things out.

Camilla figured he must have seen her car and was fishing for answers. She pulled to the side before answering. Sure enough, Barnard’s voice came through, sounding casual. “Camilla, where are you?”

“At home, about to tuck Jasper in. What’s up?” She kept her voice flat.

“Oh, nothing. I just finished up at the office and thought I’d check in. But since you two are getting ready for bed, I’ll let you go,” Barnard said.

Right before he hung up, Camilla added, sweet as sugar, “Wow, you’re calling me first? I’d have thought you’d be rushing home to fuss over Davina.”
