“Damon went back to work so soon?” Sierra countered.

“He said it would take over six months for his leg to fully recover, but since he can walk without the wheelchair now, he went back. He just has to be careful not to put any pressure on it, avoid bumping it, and not walk too much. Then, it shouldn’t be a problem.”
The smile on Sierra’s face was stiff and bitter. Her eyes welled up, but she continued to feign composure.“That’s good.”
“Sierra…” Aubrey felt Sierra was holding back and avoiding the issue, and it made her heart ache for her.
She wondered what Sierra was really thinking.
Was she going to pretend she didn’t know anything, turn a blind eye for the sake of her child and her family?
After a moment, Sierra_ picked up her water glass, turned her head to look out the window, took a sip of cold water as if she had been preparing herself mentally for a long time, and then set down the glass.“Bree, you have something you want to tell me, don’t you?”
Aubrey clenched her fist, conflicted, and her mind was in turmoil.
If she spoke up, Buddy’s family would fall apart, and Ryan would blame her for the broken family and failed marriage.
If she didn’t speak up, she would be betraying her best friend and her own conscience.
A dilemma!
Just as she was hesitating, the glass door was pushed open, and two familiar figures walked in.
Aubrey immediately lowered her head.
Following Sierra were Ryan and Lily.
It was as if the heavens themselves were displeased with Ryan’s actions, orchestrating such a coincidental encounter.
Aubrey pretended to pick something up, nearly burying her head under the table. Ryan and Lily didn’t spot them and took sears behind Sierra.
Their tables were separated by just two chair backs.
Once the pair was seated, Aubrey straightened up, exhaling deeply.
“Lily, what do you want to eat?”
Ryan’s voice rang out, hitting Sierra like a thunderbolt. She froze, her blood seeming to reverse course through her veins, instantly reddening her eyes.
She lowered her gaze, her fists clenched and trembling.
Lily’s voice followed, “Whatever you decide is fine. I’m not picky.”
“Their roast duck is great, and we’ll get some of your favorite short ribs…”
“Ryan, I asked you out today because I need a favor.”
“Name it.”
“A certain Mr. Quinn is hosting a party this Saturday. Could you take me?”
“Who’s Mr. Quinn?”
“We met once at the Blackwoods‘ house. He’s a good friend of Mr. Blackwood, so he should be a good friend of yours too, right? A lot of big shots from New Haven City will be at his party.”
“Lily, Damon and I are friends, but I don’t really know Mr. Quinn.”
“Could you ask Mr. Blackwood to get me an invitation?”
“Well…”
“Please, Ryan, please just help me out.”
Aubrey glanced over and saw Lily’s hands on Ryan’s, gently shaking them.
When she looked at Sierra, two clear tears were sliding down her pale cheeks. She looked utterly devastated, sitting there frozen.
“I’ll see what I can do,” Ryan conceded.

“Thank you, Ryan. I was so blind before. How could I have missed out on such a great guy?” Lily pouted playfully, her voice sweet and coquettish.“Im so grateful to you.”
“What’s in the past is in the past. Let’s not bring it up.”
Over on the other side, Sierra wiped away her tears, gripped her water glass, stood up, and turned, splashed the cold water directly on Ryan.
Ryan, caught completely off guard, was drenched and looked a mess. He stood up, exasperated.“What the hell…”
Turning around, he saw Sierra, and he was instantly dumbfounded, utterly shocked.
Lily stood up, looking flustered, and seemed lost and bewildered when she saw Sierra and Aubrey.
“Sierra… Sierra_?!” Ryan’s voice trembled.“What are you doing here?”
Sierra, tears welling up, forced a brittle smile. “Surprised? This place is famous for its Peking duck. I’ve been in New Haven City for so long, and you never once brought me. My best friend brings me for Peking duck, you remember your ex–girlfriend loves cowboy steak, but you don’t know what I like to eat?”
Sierra spat the words out, grabbed her purse, and headed for the exit.
Ryan glared daggers at Aubrey, snapping, “Aubrey Hayes, this is all your fault, isn’t it?”
Aubrey rolled her eyes, speechless. How could he possibly blame this on her?
Ryan snatched up his phone and chased after Sierra.” Sierra, let me explain…”
Aubrey felt a wave of exhaustion. Grabbing her bag and phone, she passed Lily, leaving a parting shot:“Using Ryan to try and snag an invitation from my boyfriend? Keep dreaming!”
Lily’s face darkened, her fists clenching as she glared at Aubrey.
Aubrey walked out of the restaurant.
She watched Sierra get into a rideshare and drive away. Ryan chased after the car for a few steps before stopping, panting, and placing his hands on his hips, gazing upward in frustration.
She stared at Ryan’s retreating figure, a wave of melancholy washing over her.
She had witnessed their courtship, their whirlwind wedding, their blissful early days, and their petty squabbles. Now, seeing their marriage crumble, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness.
Aubrey got in her car and drove back to the office.
She called Sierra to make sure she was okay, and only then did she feel relieved.
As night fell, the city’s neon lights began to blaze.
Aubrey finished up her work for the day and prepared to leave. Sitting at her desk, she sent a text to Damon.
Aubrey: 【Damon, if Ryan asks you to help him get an invitation to Mr. Quinn’s dinner party, don’t do it.]
Damon replied instantly: [What’s up?]
Aubrey: [Lily met up with Ryan, trying to get the invitation from you. Sierra and I happened to see them.]
Damon: 【Okay, I got it. Are you off work?】
Aubrey: [Just finished, about to leave.]
Damon: [I’ll come pick you up.】
Aubrey: [I have my car, no need to pick me up.]
Damon: [Okay, drive safe.]
Aubrey sent back a cute nodding emoji. She put down her phone, having been so busy all day that she hadn’t even had a sip of water. She picked up her water bottle from the corner of her desk, opened the lid, and took a drink
As soon as the water hit her mouth, she knew something was wrong.
Being a Crestview City native, she had a refined palate and preferred subtle flavors. She could even distinguish between different brands of boiled
water. But this water tasted off.
