Garrett’s face instantly turned as white as snow. He trembled in terror and hastily knelt before Damon, his voice shaking, “M–Mr. Blackwood. I’m a ;ood person. I’m Aubrey Hayes‘ colleague. It’s a misunderstanding! It’s really a misunderstanding!”
The two men next to them respectfully nodded. “Yes, Mr. Blackwood.” After saying that, they walked to the corner, picked up shovels, and headed >utside.
The moment the door closed, Garrett was so scared he wet his pants.
He thought Evan Blackwood was terrifying, but this younger Mr. Blackwood was even more so.
No one isn’t afraid when death is right in front of them.
Yeah, he was.
Damon turned to leave, but Garrett, seized by terror, scrambled forward, clutching at Damon’s pants leg, tears streaming down his face as he begged, Mr. Blackwood… please don’t kill me! I’ll tell you everything! It was your father, your father told me to do it!”
Damon shook off his grip and took two steps back, towering over him. His voice was icy. “Even if my father wanted to break Aubrey and me up, he vouldn’t resort to such a filthy trick. And he sure as hell wouldn’t be dumb enough to let you know he was behind it.”
Damon pulled out his phone, opened the video recorder, and pointed it at him. “You have one chance. Tell me who was really behind this.”
It… it was Evan Blackwood, your cousin. He said your dad told him to do it, and he sent me to act.”
What kind of drug did you give Aubrey?”
I don’t know. Evan gave me the pills.”
What did he give you in return?”
$500,000 in cash.”
Damon saved the video, untied the ropes on Garrett’s wrists, got up, walked over to the corner, and tossed Garrett’s phone in front of him. “Get out of
iere.”
Garrett looked stunned, rubbing his sore wrists, then quickly grabbed his phone, hardly believing that he was being let go so easily.
Damon opened the door and walked out.
The two men were smoking in the corner and immediately stood up when they saw him emerge, stomping out their cigarettes. “Mr. Blackwood.”
Keep tailing him.”
Yes, sir.” The man responded respectfully.
Damon drove away from the desolate area, heading towards the hospital.
Dawn was breaking, the sky tinged with a pearly white as a hazy mist enveloped the earth. The car’s display screen read 5:45 AM.
As he merged onto the city’s main road, his phone rang.
Damon answered, switched it to speakerphone, and focused on driving.
Tracy’s urgent, anxious voice filled the car. “Damon, where are you? Get to the hospital, quick! Aubrey’s awake, but she’s not doing well. She’s been haking and can’t catch her breath, and she’s having chest pains. The doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong.”
Damon’s heart clenched, his face darkening. He slammed his foot on the accelerator. “I’m on my way. Tracy, just hold het.”
How could this happen to Aubrey?”
She has severe depression.”
What?” Tracy asked, stunned, and immediately ended the call.
Damon’s grip on the steering wheel tightened until his knuckles turned white, his chest heaving with a mix of urgency and anxiety
He was worried that Aubrey’s detention of Garrett Miller had gone on for too long, and Garrett’s family might report him to the police. To avoid future troubles, he left the unconscious Aubrey at the hospital, entrusting her care to Tracy Blackwood, and couldn’t wait to investigate the
mastermind behind this.
He hadn’t expected her to wake up so quickly.

And it had triggered the recurrence of her old psychosomatic symptoms.
His expression grave, he floored the gas pedal on the deserted avenue.
In the hospital room.
Aubrey Hayes lay in bed, tears soaking her pale face and the pillow beneath her.

She couldn’t control her body; she was shaking uncontrollably, her heart was clenching in agony, and her skin felt as if ants were crawling all over it, everything hurt, and she was also hallucinating.
The voice was Garrett Miller’s, whispering eerily in her ear: “Damon’s plaything…”
Tracy Blackwood threw herself onto the bed, embracing her, blankets and all, gently stroking Aubrey’s arm, her tender voice murmuring with heartache, “Aubrey, it’s okay now, don’t be scared, and don’t be sad, my brother will be back soon.”
“I’m sorry, Tracy,” Aubrey choked out weakly, unable to control the painful physical reactions or the sudden wave of depression that washed over her. “I feel like I’m dying.”
All she could feel was that terrifying, near–death sensation creeping in again.
“Aubrey, don’t feel guilty. You don’t need to apologize. The nurse has already gone to get a psychiatrist. And don’t be scared, you’re not going to die.”
Aubrey closed her eyes, her whole head numb. All that was left was a dull ache and an overwhelming sense of suffocation.
Suddenly, the door burst open with a bang.
Tracy stood up at the sound, turning to face the doorway.
Damon, his face dark, strode breathlessly toward the bed.
“Damon, come quickly, look at Aubrey! She won’t stop shaking.” Tracy’s voice was filled with anxiety, her eyes brimming with tears of worry.
Damon’s chest rose and fell as he reached the bedside. Seeing Aubrey in the throes of a somatic episode, his eyes turned red–rimmed. He sat on the edge of the bed, pulled Aubrey’s upper body into his arms, and held her tight.
Aubrey leaned against his comforting chest, her body still tormented by the grip of her mind and emotions.
“Bree, I’m here,” Damon said, his voice thick with emotion. He tightened his hold, kissing the top of her head, and murmured soothingly, “Just calm down, slowly. Don’t be scared, don’t worry, don’t be sad. Everything’s okay. I’m here, I’ll always be here.”
Tracy, watching Aubrey’s distress, her eyes shimmering with tears, asked, “Damon, when did Aubrey get depression?”
“About six years ago, I think. It probably started when we first broke up.”
Tracy, unfamiliar with the illness, looked puzzled. “But you guys are back together now, you’re together again. What’s there to be depressed about?” Damon shot her a disapproving look. “Tracy, don’t say things like that. It’ll only make her feel worse.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Aubrey,” Tracy quickly apologized.
But Aubrey couldn’t register a single word. Trapped in the torment of her body and emotions, she was drowning in a pain that made her long for death. She burrowed deeper into Damon’s chest, desperate for her body to find some relief from the agonizing sensations.
Aubrey was nestled against Damon’s comforting chest, but her body remained under the control of her mind and emotions, leaving her feeling tormented. Damon gently stroked Aubrey’s head and, casting a look at Tracy, offered a simple explanation, “Severe depression isn’t just about emotions; it’s a disease of the brain. It’s not something that can be cured by simply looking on the bright side, thinking positively, or taking a walk. It’s like telling someone who is on the verge of death that they’ll be fine if they just relax.”
Tracy looked at Aubrey with concern, rubbing her hands together as she moved closer and sat down on a chair “Damon, what caused Aubrey to become like this?”
Damon held Aubrey’s trembling body tightly in his arms, his voice low and raspy, each word laced with pain. “It’s a complicated issue childhood trauma, a series of emotional setbacks and heartbreaks, family upheavals, among other factors. It’s a testament to her strength that she’s made it this
far.”
Tracy sniffled sadly. “No wonder the old TCM (Traditional herb medicine) practitioner who treated Grandpa said her spirit was deeply wounded. I didn’t pay attention to it at the time.”
“She’s actually been improving with the treatment over the past month.” Damon squeezed his eyes shut in anguish, burying his face in her hair. “It’s all my fault. I didn’t protect her well enough.”

Just then, a nurse came in with a psychiatrist.
After Aubrey was examined and put on an IV drip, the physical pain she was experiencing gradually subsided with the help of the medication.
In the hospital bed, Aubrey felt her pain lessen, and her mood became somewhat calmer. The auditory hallucinations ceased, and her emotions turned
numb.
In the hospital room, the doctor listened attentively as Damon described her condition, learning that she suffered from severe insomnia, frequent physical symptoms, and had been saved from several suicide attempts, with suicidal thoughts often tormenting her.
After hearing the symptoms, the doctor suggested, “Let’s do MECT on her.”
Tracy was completely baffled, not knowing what it was.
Damon was conflicted.
Upon hearing this, Aubrey became uncharacteristically agitated, angrily refusing, “I’m not doing MECT.”
