“We’re not doing it.” Damon immediately rejected the doctor’s suggestion, returned to the bedside, sat down on the chair, and held Aubrey’s icy hand tightly, comforting her, “We won’t do it, I promise.”
“Damon, I can get better, I definitely can,” Aubrey said, her eyes moist, gazing sadly at Damon, her heart aching with every beat.
No matter how much pain she was in right now, she believed she could get through it. She would escape the hellhole of depression.
Damon’s eyes softened, his large, warm hand gently massaging hers. “I believe in you. You’ve always been strong. You can do this.”
Aubrey nodded.
Damon reached out, his thumb gently wiping away the tears from her eyelashes. He leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Close your eyes and get some sleep while the medicine helps.”
Aubrey glanced at the IV bag on the stand, then looked back at him. “When I wake up, I’ll feel better. Can you stay here with me?”
“I’ll be here with you the whole time. Sleep now.”
Aubrey felt calmer. She closed her eyes, and the weariness washed over her as the medicine took effect.
Meanwhile.
“Doctor, what is MECT?” Tracy asked quietly.
Doctor: “Electroconvulsive therapy.”
Tracy frowned. “Is it dangerous?”
Doctor: “No, it’s a very safe and routine procedure. It’s usually used to treat severe depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. It’s quite effective.”
Tracy looked back at Aubrey, who was slowly drifting off to sleep in the hospital bed. “Then why doesn’t she want to do it?”
Doctor: “She’s probably worried about the side effects.”
With that, the doctor left the room.
Tracy pulled out her phone, settled into a nearby lounge chair, and began searching online for information about MECT, researching the procedure and its potential aftereffects.
n that moment, she felt like she understood why Aubrey had suffered from depression for so many years, and why, even when it became severe, nanifesting in physical symptoms and suicidal thoughts, she was still unwilling to undergo this procedure.
Beside the bed, the dim yellow light grew fainter, illuminating Aubrey’s sleeping face and Damon’s heavy, shadowed form.
He leaned down, taking Aubrey’s hand in his, pressing it tightly to his lips, gazing deeply at her wan, sleeping face.
f it could alleviate Aubrey’s suffering from depression, he would be willing to let her have the procedure.
But he was also terrified of the potential side effects.
Dawn broke.
Tracy went to work, leaving Damon at the hospital to stay with Aubrey.
The IV drip wasn’t removed until eight in the morning. Aubrey slept until ten, and when she woke up, Damon was sitting beside her. The instant her
yes fluttered open, his lips touched her forehead in a gentle kiss. “Awake?” he murmured softly, a tender smile gracing his lips.
Aubrey smiled knowingly and sat up in bed.
Damon rose to help her.
I’m okay,” Aubrey said with a slight smile, smoothing her disheveled hair and looking around. “Tracy went to work?”
Yeah.”
Let’s go home,” Aubrey said, swinging her legs over the side of the bed, wanting to get up.
Damon placed his hands on her knees. “Bree, maybe you should stay in the hospital for treatment.”
No need, I’m really fine.” Aubrey forced a smile. “I still need to settle the score with Garrett Miller, he’s the one who drugged me.”

“I took care of it.” Damon pulled out his phone, opened the video he’d recorded last night, and handed it to her.
Aubrey took it and watched, shaking her head with a frown.
“What’s wrong?”
“This evidence can’t be used.”
Damon looked puzzled. “Why not?”

“This kind of evidence is illegal and wouldn’t be admissible in court. Garrett could even turn around and accuse you of kidnapping and imprisoning him, forcing him to say those things through abuse and intimidation.”
Damon’s eyes darkened.
Aubrey’s tone was heavy. “He’s an experienced lawyer; he knows how to use the law to get away with things. Unless we have proof that he drugged me, there’s no way to touch him.”
Damon clenched his fist, angrily slamming it against the bed frame.
Aubrey turned off the video on her phone and placed it in Damon’s hand, softly reassuring him, “But at least we know now that he and your cousin are in cahoots, trying to do me harm. With the enemy out in the open, we can be prepared for anything.”
Damon gave a rueful smile, a hint of worry flickering in his eyes.
Aubrey laced her fingers through his, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “Don’t worry, the enemy is out in the open. I’ll be sure to protect myself. Nothing will happen to me.”
“I’m setting you up with a female assistant,” Damon stated firmly. “You have to accept, or I won’t be able to relax.”
