Chapter148
She wouldn’t do it, absolutely not.
This was Aubrey’s firm stance.

She’d been through so much pain, almost succumbing to depression and meeting her maker several times, but she still hadn’t chosen to undergo the procedure.
Firstly, the illness had severely diminished her will to live, and she didn’t want to mess with her brain.
Secondly, she didn’t want to forget him.
Forgetting Damon, forgetting all the happy moments they’d shared, would be worse than death for her.
Damon had always respected her opinions in everything.
Since she was unwilling, Damon didn’t push it any further. He took her home from the hospital.
On the way back, Damon told Aubrey everything about catching Garrett and intimidating him, asking her to analyze whether it would lead to a lawsuir
After hearing the whole story, Aubrey determined that it wouldn’t.
The reason was that Garrett had no evidence, and he wouldn’t dare offend someone with power and influence again.
After all, any thorough investigation would inevitably lead to the drugging, and he didn’t know Damon well enough. Just the mere threat of severe retribution scared him so badly he pissed his pants. That kind of man was definitely a coward, valuing life above all else and bullying the weak while fearing the strong.
Blackwood Crescent.
The morning sun was warm and gentle, spreading generously across the entire courtyard, light and shadow weaving together on the lush green lawn to create a comforting warmth.
As the car entered the courtyard, a familiar sedan was parked nearby.
Aubrey tilted her head slightly to look at Damon, who had smoothly steered the car toward the garage. His gaze swept over the car on the courry and drive. “That’s my dad’s car.”
Hearing that it was his father’s car, Aubrey’s breath hitched almost imperceptibly, her fingers gently curling in on her lap as she lowered her head and took a deep breath.
Twenty–nine years of life experience, combined with the professional skills she had honed in the legal profession, had taught her to mask her inner turmoil with outward composure.
Even though she was no longer a young, naive girl, and was eloquent and poised in the courtroom, she still instinctively felt a sense of awe in front of Damon’s elders, especially a powerful figure like his father.
It wasn’t fear, but more of a clear–headed recognition of their respective status and position.
She followed Damon into the living room.
She saw Chase Blackwood and Victoria Stone sitting upright on the rosewood sofa, Mrs. Quinn serving them tea, refreshments, and fruit. They were sipping tea, waiting quietly.
“Dad, Mom, you’re here so early?” Damon greeted them gently.
Aubrey also nodded politely, “Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Blackwood.”
Chase nodded with an air of authority, while Victoria Stone smiled and stood up.“Good morning, Aubrey. Are you feeling better?”
Aubrey was taken aback. From Victoria’s question, she could tell that they must have learned about her illness from Tracy Blackwood and rushed to the house to see her.
“Much better, thank you, Mrs. Stone.”
“Have you had breakfast?” Victoria asked again.
“Yes, I have,” Aubrey responded politely. “Damon and I ate out.”
“Don’t just stand there.” Victoria reached out her hand to her, her eyes full of affection, with a biot of pity and concern, her voice expecially gentle.“Come and sit here with me.”

Aubrey glanced at Damon, feeling a little nervous, and walked over to Victoria to sit down next to her.

Chase stood up and walked towards the study, leaving Damon with a sentence: “Damon, come to the study to talk.”
Aubrey felt a surge of unease, her eyes darting to Damon. Her heart was a tangled mess, and those old, unwelcome emotions threatened to resurface.
Damon followed Chase toward the study.
“Don’t worry.” Victoria seemed to sense her anxiety, offering a comforting smile.“Damon’s father isn’t unreasonable. He has his concerns and expectations, but in the end, he can’t win against Damon. He’s not some domineering, stubborn old fossil. Just give him some time to process this.”
Aubrey felt a wave of relief wash over her at her mother–in–law’s words, her anxiety easing.
Victoria suddenly fell silent, her gaze heavy as she studied Aubrey’s face. She gently stroked Aubrey’s pale, slender hand, letting out a long, emotionally charged sigh.
The intensity of Victoria’s gaze made Aubrey uncomfortable.“Is everything okay, Mrs. Stone?”
“These past
few
years must have been so hard on you, child,” Victoria murmured, her voice thick with emotion.
That endearment, child, struck a chord deep within Aubrey, and her eyes instantly welled up.
Even her own mother had never called her that with such tenderness.
It was such an affectionate term.
It was overflowing with maternal love, and Aubrey lowered her head, holding back tears as she shook her head, denying her hardship.
“Honey, everything is moving in a positive direction. Our whole family adores you. Except for some things we can’t change, Damon’s father actually likes you as a person too. Don’t dwell on the bad things of the past anymore. This is your home now, and we’re all your family, always your most unbreakable support. No matter what, try to relax and focus on the good things. Don’t keep dwelling on the unhappy past. Eat well, rest well, and if there’s anything that makes you unhappy, tell Damon, or tell me. We’ll find a solution together.”
Aubrey listened intently, feeling more and more like crying.
Although her mother–in–law didn’t mention her illness directly, every word she spoke was meant to comfort her, to encourage her to bravely overcome her depression.
How fortunate she was to have met Damon in this lifetime.
Damon always put her first, always thinking of her in everything. She had only mentioned Garrett once, and Damon had already secretly arranged for someone to follow him.
Knowing about her illness, Damon’s family was also very concerned about her. Damon’s parents didn’t delay for a moment, immediately rushing over
to wait for her at home.
She wasn’t sure where Damon’s father stood, but his mother’s warmth genuinely moved her.
Her heart swelled with warmth, and two clear tears escaped the corners of her eyes.
Victoria gently raised a hand, her warm fingertip wiping away her tears, and murmured with kindness, “You’re such a sensitive girl. If you could be as carefree as Tracy, you’d realize nothing in this world is worth getting worked up over.”
Aubrey smiled, her vision blurred by tears, and she felt a surge of longing to call her Mom.
Why were mothers in this world so different?
