Chapter 217: Aubrey Threatens Uncle Charles

Aubrey knew something was off, but she couldn’t figure out what it was.

Not wanting to get in the way of his work, she climbed back into bed and lay down.

Jack in the room, the light on his side was dimway too dark to be reading any files. Damon hadn’t even turned on the desk lamp. He just sat there in silence, a jacket draped over his shoulders. His back looked broad and solid, yet heavy with a cold, quiet

oneliness.

Aubrey watched him from behind while he stared out at the moonlight. Time ticked away slowly. As the sky began to turn pale with the coming dawn, she finally drifted off to sleep in the silence.

When she woke up the next morning, Damon was already awake.

Damon was patient as ever. He helped her get dressed, wash up, take her meds, and eat breakfast. Once he saw she was feeling

etter, he drove her back to Blackwood Crescent around noon.

He didn’t leave any instructions or say much of anything. He just headed straight back to the base.

A housekeeper stayed at the house to keep her company.

he shook off her gloomy mood and went back to the law firm the next day.

ince she’d forgotten everyone, she had to get to know her colleagues all over again. Her assistant, Ruby, and the receptionist, Daisy, were both incredibly warm and welcoming.

Her boss, Vincent Hall, had already visited her at Blackwood Crescent after she was discharged. He had always made it clear how nuch he valued and appreciated her work. Vincent was clearly thrilled to have her back in the office.

Her other coworkers were a different story. They were polite enough, but distant.

Was I a total bitch before?she asked Ruby, I get the feeling nobody here really likes me.

{uby chuckled. Not at all, Lawyer Hayes. You’re actually really nicealways polite and sweet. It’s just that you used to be very juiet. Plus, you were a bit of a wildcard in the industry. You switched from pro bono work to corporate law, and as soon as you rrived in New Haven City, you landed a $200 million commercial dispute. It was a nightmare of a case, but you won big in just a ew months and walked away with millions in fees.

Then there was that massive Vance Corp pollution case,Ruby continued. It was a national scandal. You sent several of their top xecs to prison and became an overnight sensation. The senior staff here are a bit bitter about it. They’re jealous and think you just got lucky rather than having actual talent. That’s why things are a little cold between you and them.

From what Ruby said, She realized her relationships with her colleagues were strictly professional.

The only people she actually seemed to click with were her assistant and the receptionist.

Daisy, the receptionist, was a bubbly, cute girl.

You had so many guys chasing you back then, Lawyer Hayes,Daisy chimed in. This guy named Evans used to send you insanely expensive flowers every single day. We were all so jealous!

Alex?she asked.

Daisy nodded. Exactly. Alex Evans. He’s the one who handed you that $200 million case on a silver platter. He basically let you pocket millions in one go. He was really going all out to win you over.

Aubrey remembered Alex Evans. She had seen him since the accident. He was Skylar’s older brother, the CEO of Evans Corp, and one of Damon’s best friends.

She had an impression of him, but it was blurry.

She didn’t expect her coworkers to know he had once pursued her. Something major must have happened to cause her breakup

with Damon back then. That was the only way Alex would have felt comfortable chasing her so openly.

There’s a code between brothersyou don’t move on your friend’s girl. Alex wouldn’t have dared to make a move unless things were truly over.

Marks

She couldn’t help but wonder what she and Damon had gone through together. This memory loss felt unfair to himlike a debt he could never repay.

But then again, Damon was the one who made the call for her to have the surgery. He had to have known her mind would be a blank slate afterward. He must have been ready for this, right?

f the choice was between being sick and losing your memory, no one would choose the illness. Damon was no exception.

by noon.

Aubrey finished reorganizing her father’s case files. She backed up the new evidence and the formal appeal before sending verything out via courier to the Crestview District Attorney’s Office.

Once that was off her plate, she reached out to Zach to get her uncle’s private cell number. As soon as she had it, she hit dial.

Charles was surprised when he got her call, though his tone stayed polite. Is there something you need?

Uncle Charles, I’ve refiled the appeal for my father’s case. This time, I’m asking for your signature. If you’re not the one reviewing ; then stay out of it. I’m confident any other prosecutor who sees this evidence will grant a retrial.

Charles let out a heavy sigh. Aubrey, look

Aubrey cut him off. Uncle, please. If you have any respect for me as your future nieceinlaw, don’t interfere. I know you don’t ke me. I know you look down on me and don’t want Damon to marry me. But let me tell you thisif my father doesn’t get justice his time, I’ll make Damon quit his job and go into business. I’m marrying him, and nothing is going to stop me.

Charles snapped, his voice rising in panic. Are you threatening me? Aerospace is Damon’s dream. He loves his research. It’s a noble areer that brings honor to the Blackwood family. How can you be so selfish? You’d make him walk away from everything just for our own feelings?

ubrey leaned back in her office chair, listening to his selfrighteous lecture. It was almost funny. She toyed with her pen, her oice cold and flat. If I had to guess, this is exactly how you guilttripped me the first time, isn’t it? You used my love for Damon gainst me. You made me sacrifice our relationship for the sake of his noble career. It’s a trick that clearly works every time for

ou.

Charles snapped, So you’ve lost your memory, not your mind. Don’t you dare destroy Damon’s career for your socalled love.

Lubrey scoffed. Dealing with a stubborn elitist like him required a ruthless touch. She had to hit him where it hurt and corner him

with his own tactics.

Uncle Charles, I have amnesia,Aubrey said, her voice cold. I don’t have some grand, tragic love for Damon anymore. This is a alculated choice. Men like Damon don’t just grow on trees. I’m thirty now. I don’t have time to shop around or waste another hree years getting to know someone new.

Damon is rich, powerful, handsome, and in great shape. Most importantly, he’s obsessed with me and takes care of my every need. m not an idiot. Why would I give that up? Even if my father’s case is never reopened, I’m marrying him regardless.

Charles let out a long, heavy sigh through the phone. Aubrey smirked. He was taking the bait.
