Chapter 219: The Missus
Damon was an incredible cook.
He’d cooked a whole spread of seafood. It was light and delicious–everything she loved.
Cool white light filled the living room.
They ate in silence. The atmosphere was a bit colder than usual, but Damon still looked after her. He kept putting food on her plate, leboning her fish, and ladling her soup. Taking care of her like this seemed to be second nature to him.
After dinner, he loaded the dishwasher and tidied up the kitchen. Then, they both headed to their own rooms.
Aubrey was buzzing now that Damon was finally home. That night, she took a long shower and washed her hair. After drying it, she hecked herself in the mirror, a shy smile tugging at her lips.
She threw on a light jacket, walked out of her room, and knocked on his door.
She stood in the hallway, taking a deep breath to calm her racing heart. She was nervous, but she was also excited.
A moment later, Damon opened the door. He was wearing light gray pajamas, and his short hair was still damp. He looked ndifferent. “Need something?”
Aubrey forced a smile, but her heart sank.
She’d finally worked up the
courage to come see him, and he was being so cold. It was a total letdown.
… I wanted to borrow a book from your room,” she whispered, her voice tight with nerves.
Damon stepped back, holding the door open. “Go ahead.”
Aubrey bit her lip and nodded. She walked inside, feeling stiff and awkward. She stepped into his study and scanned the bookshelf for a moment before pulling out a random classic. Clutching the book to her chest, she turned back to face him.
He was still standing by the door, holding it open as if waiting for her to leave.

Disappointment tugged at her heart, but she forced a smile and walked toward him. “Thanks for the book,” she said politely. “I’ll give
t back when I’m done.”
Just keep it. You don’t have to return it.” Damon shoved one hand into his pocket while the other stayed on the doorknob. His gaze was distant, his expression heavy with an unreadable mood.
Aubrey hugged the book tighter against her chest. She couldn’t stop looking at him–his sharp features, those deep, dark eyes, and his pale lips.
She didn’t want to leave. She just wanted to stay with him a little longer and talk. It didn’t have to be anything physical–no hugs, no touching. She just wanted to be near him.
‘Do you have work tomorrow?” Aubrey asked.
I’m off for the next two days.”
“Do you want me to take some time off, too? I could stay home with you.”
“No need. Go do your thing. I’ve got my own stuff to take care of.”
Aubrey looked down and let out a small, frustrated sigh, puffing out her cheeks. She nodded, but her feet felt like they were glued to the floor. She couldn’t bring herself to move.
“Was there something else?” Damon asked.
Aubrey felt a surge of heat in her chest. The urge to hug him made her heart race and her face flush before she even moved. After a heartbeat of hesitation, she finally found her courage and stepped toward him.

Still clutching the book in one hand, she wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face in his broad, warm chest.
Damon stiffened instantly.
He looked down at the woman who had suddenly thrown herself into his arms. The scent of her dark hair filled his senses. She felt soft and curvesome against him, her arms locked tight around his waist.
His eyes darkened. His Adam’s apple bobbed. Pulling his hand from his pocket, he gripped her slender waist and hauled her flush against him, dipping his head to bury his face in the crook of her neck.
The hug was crushing, leaving no space between them.
Aubrey could feel the immediate shift in his body.
He was hard. And he had gotten that way fast.
They stood there by the door for a long moment, locked in each other’s arms.
Holding her this close was sweet torture for Damon–a desperate ache he couldn’t soothe and a hunger he could barely restrain.
He eventually grabbed her arms and gently pushed her back, his voice thick and raspy. “It’s late. Go to bed. Goodnight.”
Aubrey smiled, a soft blush warming her cheeks. “Yeah. Goodnight.”
After saying her goodbyes, she clutched her books and hurried out of his room, a spark of joy in her heart.
Damon had actually hugged her back–and he had been intense. Maybe she really had been overthinking things.
He wasn’t being cold; he was just being careful. Restrained. She felt a weight lift as she headed back to her own room, her mood much brighter.
Damon slowly shut the door.
The light in his eyes vanished instantly. He dragged himself into the study and sank into his office chair, staring blankly at the desk. His hand reached out, grabbing the robot.
He slowly flicked the power switch.
‘Good evening, Master,” Aero’s crisp, mechanical voice chirped.
Damon’s expression was hollow. He stared at the robot, his broad shoulders slumped as if they were carrying a crushing Weight. He looked utterly defeated.
After a long silence, he whispered to the machine, “Aero…. My girlfriend is leaving me in six months. The clock is ticking again. Should I quit my job and find a way to marry her? Or should I just walk away from this relationship now?”
Aero replied, “Master, a man should prioritize his career and his goals. There are plenty of women in the world. If this one leaves the next will be better, more obedient, and even more charming.
Damon let out a long, weary sigh, a bitter smile tugging at his lips. “But isn’t a life partner… isn’t family supposed to be more important than anything else?”
“Master, family and partners are indeed important. However, does she actually want to marry you?”
Damon hesitated for a long moment. When he finally spoke, his voice was hollow and drained of energy. She has no memory of me. No feelings left. If she stays, it’s probably just out of obligation Technically, we haven’t broken up yet. We’re still a couple.”
“Master, if you aren’t one hundred percent sure of the outcome, you shouldn’t sacrifice your career to pursue her. You could always find a new girlfriend.”
“I’don’t want anyone else,” Damon snapped, shutting the idea down instantly.
“Understood, Master. Would you like me to suggest some ways to make her stay?”
“What’s the point in forcing her? It would only make us both miserable. I want her to live her life exactly how she wants. I just want
