Bree lay there, trying to cool down. After a few minutes, regret hit her like a wave. Those texts were so damn childish. She’d basically handed him her dignity on a silver platter, showing him exactly how desperate and irrational she was. And calling him a scumbag? Maybe she’d gone a little too far with that.

The truth was, she wanted him back. If she didn’t, she wouldn’t have gone to his family for backup. She wouldn’t be staying under his parentsroof right now.

She bolted upright, grabbed her phone, and opened the Grid. She needed to unsend those messages. Fast.

But she was too late. The window had closed. She couldn’t take them back.

Damon hadn’t replied, either. Just silence.

Sleep didn’t come easy that night. She tossed and turned until the early hours of the morning. When she finally drifted off, the nightmares took over.

In the dream, she was sobbing, though she didn’t know why. Then, a massive dog lunged at her, its teeth sinking into her skin. She shivered, struggling with everything she had, but no one came. She screamed, her voice lost and helpless.

Suddenly, Damon appeared. He swung a heavy wooden club, sending the beast flying. He didn’t stop, raining down blows until the dog lay still in a pool of blood.

He dropped the club and rushed to her, pulling her into his arms.

Seeing him was like finding a lifeline in a dark, drowning sea. She buried her face in his chest and let the tears flow.

He held her tight. Don’t be scared, Bree,he whispered. I’m right here.

Damon, she sobbed, clutching him like her life depended on it. Please. Can we just not break up?

Damon shoved her back, his face cold. No.

She fell, the impact jolting her awake. Aubrey stared at the ceiling, her eyes wet with tears: Her body was still shaking from the nightmare, a dull ache thumping in her chest.

The snow had stopped outside, but it was even colder now.

She got up to wash her face. She looked pale and drained, so she applied a bit of makeup to hide it. After bundling up in layers, she grabbed her coat and bag and headed out.

Chase Blackwood and Victoria Stone were already eating breakfast. When Victoria saw her, she quickly called out, Aubrey, come have some breakfast.

Aubrey hesitated for a few seconds before walking over. She still felt low, but she managed a polite greeting. Morning, Mom. Morning, Dad.

Morning.Chase cleared his throat, his warm gaze lingering on her tired face. Sit down and eat.

Aubrey set her things aside and took a seat.

Their last argument had ended badly, but Chase didn’t seem to be holding a grudge. He treated her like family, as if the tension from before had never happened.

She ate her breakfast in silence.

There’s a luxury sedan sitting in the garage,Chase said. You should take it. It’s yours to drive.

Thanks, Dad,Aubrey replied, forcing a small smile.

Victoria spoke softly, her voice filled with warmth. Aubrey, honey, my son isn’t some player. He’d give his life for you. The money,

the career, the powernone of that matters to him as much as you do. Just give him some time. He must be going through something.

Aubrey kept her head down, picking at a dumpling. Her throat felt tight, and the food tasted like cardboard. She could barely

swallow.

Seeing her silence, Victoria added quickly, Aubrey, if you don’t trust Damon, don’t you at least trust me?

To put Victoria’s mind at ease, Aubrey forced a small smile. I trust you, Mom.

Then stay here and make yourself at home,Victoria said, her eyes full of motherly kindness.

Aubrey bit her lip and gave a small nod.

Chase let out a heavy sigh but didn’t say a word.

After breakfast, Aubrey took the spare car from the garage and headed to the office.

Heartbreak was a bitch.

She had no energy at work. Her mind kept wandering, and she felt completely drained, unable to focus on anything.

She skipped lunch entirely, surviving on a cup of coffee while burying herself in paperwork. Getting busy was the only way to temporarily drown out thoughts of Damon and escape the ache in her chest.

After work, Tracy came over to pick her up. They went out for a nice dinner, hit the mall for some retail therapy, and caught a

movie.

Tracy was clearly doing her best to drag her out of her depression.

It actually worked pretty well.

After hanging out with Tracy Blackwood all night, I dragged myself home, did some light cleaning, and took a quick shower. I was so exhausted I crashed the second my head hit the pillow.

The third and fourth days were relatively normal. With Tracy by my side, my mood started to lift. I stopped obsessing over the fact that Damon Blackwood had broken up with me

But on the fifth day, Damon showed up.

It was Saturday at noon. A heavy snow was falling outside, but the house was warm and cozy.

I was sitting in the living room with Tracy, both of us glued to our phones playing PUBG.

Tracy had just taught me how to play. She absolutely refused to let me look at a book, claiming that studying too much would just make me go braindead. She insisted I needed games to relax, blow off some steam, and actually find some joy in life again.

The game wasn’t hard to pick up. I got the hang of it almost instantly.

I was completely locked into the digital battlefield, following Tracy like a shadow. While she was out front racking up kills, I stayed back, looting gear and playing it safe. I was basically a professional camper.

When footsteps echoed through the living room, neither of us looked up.

It was the weekend, so I just assumed it was my dad walking around.

We both figured it was Chase Blackwood.

The living room was massive, with three sofas of different sizes arranged around a central coffee table.

Aubrey and Tracy sat crosslegged on the couch, huddled together under a single blanket. Their heads were down, eyes glued to their screens as they played.

Someone sat down on the sofa across from them, but neither of them spared a glance.

Aubrey, stop lootingTracy suddenly shouted. We have more than enough gear. The zone is closing in. Run!

Aubrey’s thumbs flew across the screen. Her long hair got in the way, so she quickly tucked a stray lock behind her ear without looking up.

A sharp gunshot rang out in the game.

Aubrey let out a soft yelp. Tracy, I’m hit! Help me!

Get behind the tree! Now!Tracy yelled, popping a smoke grenade.
