The cafe was quiet at one in the afternoon. Only a few tables were occupied.

Aubrey scanned the room. A woman sat alone in a corner booth, her back turned toward the entrance.

She wasn’t entirely sure if it was Veronica. It was strange–most people preferred the window seats or sat facing the door so they could see who was coming.

At the very least, they didn’t usually sit with their back to the room.

Aubrey looked her straight in the eye, seeing right through her. “Hannah ruined your face. Charles and Evan used and discarded your body. You’re bitter. You want revenge, but you’re too afraid to do it yourself. So you’re handing me the evidence. You want me to be your weapon–to destroy Evan and make Charles and Hannah suffer.”

Veronica nodded slowly. “Exactly. You’re smart, you’re strong, and you have Damon and his family to protect you. You’re the only one who can actually pull this off.”
