Chapter 120
The rain slammed down harder and faster by the minute. Out in the wastes, the teams on the Wild Hunt had no choice–they had to turn back. Out there, the mutants were losing their minds.
Soaked by the downpour, the

They ate people. They ate animals. Hell, they even started tearing into the Undead.
It was pure chaos.

against a mutant or an Undead was doable, but if they got swarmed?
Supers were rare, and the base treated them like gold. They couldn’t afford to lose a single one to a stupid mistake.
Every Super was ordered back to the base to wait out the storm.
But the rain wouldn’t stop. It only got heavier, showing no signs of letting up.
A thick cloud of anxiety and dread began to hang over the entire base.
Meanwhile, Winnie and her partner stayed behind in the base, keeping their heads down and scavenging for old bottles and cans. It was the perfect cover. While they worked, they kept their ears to the ground, digging for any intel they could find. June was losing her damn mind back at the base. When Winnie got back, she gave Josie a play–by–play, making sure hysterical detail.
Josie was doubled over laughing. She couldn’t get enough of it.

Seeing June fail, suffer, or just snap in a fit of rage was pure fuel for Josie. It was the best feeling in the world. Winnie could tell Josie absolutely loathed June. From then on, she made it her mission to dig up every bit of dirt on June just to watch Josie’s face light up when she heard it.
But losing her stash didn’t break June. Instead, she doubled down, working harder than ever to heal people, grinding for every cent to keep her family afloat.
Josie’s smile vanished instantly.
“She’s got some serious grit,” Winnie said, shaking her head. “If I took a hit like that, I would’ve folded a long time ago. Word is June’s out there grinding from sunrise to sunset, healing anyone she can for cash. Her whole crew is out there too–hustling, taking odd jobs, doing whatever they can to scrape by.”
Josie nodded slowly. “True. But that’s what makes this fun. If she broke that easily, the game would be over way too fast. There’s no sport in that.”
“Breaking someone’s spirit is an art. You have to drag them into despair, inch by inch. She needs to realize that no matter how hard she works or how much she struggles, the result is always the same. That’s how you truly crush someone.”
“I’m going to keep giving her hope–letting her think she can get back up–just so I can rip everything away from her again.”
“I’ll keep her busy, running herself ragged, only to end up with absolutely nothing.”
“I want her to watch with her own eyes as I take every single thing she cares about.”
“I’m going to make sure she dies in agony, choking on her own regret.”
Josie tightened her grip. The three walnuts in her palm instantly shattered into tiny shards, but the nutmeat inside stayed perfectly intact.
“Ms. Quinn!” a member of the Blue Owl Squad shouted from outside. “You need to see this! Now!”
Josie dropped the walnuts and walked out.
She looked up and saw a wall of rainwater surging into the courtyard.
The drainage ditches outside were completely overwhelmed.
The runoff from upstream was hitting too fast to drain, spilling straight back into the yard.
A little water wouldn’t have been a big deal, but the flood brought company.
Snakes, rats, insects–the water was crawling with them.
Outside, the critters were on the move. Most of them were mutated freaks. They caught the scent of fresh human meat and blood, and they began crawling toward the house in droves.
The Blue Owl squad lined up, spamming their abilities like they had infinite energy. It was the only thing holding back the tide of mutated
vermin.
