“It’s too late to call for backup!” the squad leader barked. “They’re pinned down. No one’s getting out of this mess yet!”
Josie pulled out her binoculars to get a better look at the Mutated Great Locust.
Zane was right.
This thing had leveled up. It wasn’t just smart; it was sadistic. It was actually playing with them.
The guys from the Base were being toyed with like mice.
But hey, that worked for her.
While the tree kept the Base busy, she could head to the Agri–Science Institute and check things out first.
Heh.
Time to snag the loot!
Josie quietly backed away, putting some distance between her and the fight, then hauled ass toward the Institute.
Credit where credit’s due, though.
The people at the Agri–Science Institute really knew their stuff.
The entire perimeter around the yard had been stripped bare. It was a total dead zone–not a single plant in sight.
Josie reached the main gate and started hammering on it. BAM. BAM. BAM.
She didn’t have much of a choice.
The guard shack was completely deserted.
Luckily, the people inside the Institute were like twitchy rabbits. The second they heard a noise, they came running.
A small slot slid open, and a camera lens poked out. It did a full 360–degree sweep of Josie before zipping back inside.
A moment later, a small side door creaked open.
A guy poked his head out, waving her over frantically. “Quick! Get in here!”
Josie almost laughed at how sketchy he was acting. “Is everyone at the Institute this much of a character?”
“Character? Kid, I’m just trying to stay alive!” The guy’s accent was pure Brooklyn–he sounded like he was in the middle of a comedy set. “Those Undead have us all jumpy as hell.”
“You wouldn’t believe it! Just two days ago, one of ‘em actually came knockin‘ on the damn door!”
“I mean, Jesus! Who’s ever heard of a zombie knockin‘?”
“If our Director hadn’t been sharp enough to see the guy’s face looked like rotted meat, I would’ve opened the door right then and there!”
“I still didn’t buy it, so I sent a drone out to get a better look.”
“And man… guess what?”
“I’m telling you, that undead’s nasty eyeball was literally pressed against my lens! I swear my heart nearly stopped. I almost died right there!”

“Hahaha!” Josie lost it. She was doubling over, laughing her head off at the guy’s thick, rhythmic Brooklyn accent.
Seriously, you can’t let anyone from Brooklyn open their mouth.
The second they start talking, it’s like a front–row seat to a damn comedy special.
Josie cracked up at every word. Eventually, she was just wheezing, making these weird duck noises.
“I’m Josie,” she said, finally catching her breath. Time for business. “You guys were looking for me? What’s the deal?
“Oh, right! The Director’s inside waiting for you,” the guard said quickly. “Let me walk you over.”
“Don’t let all the greenery freak you out. We already gassed the mutated ones. Everything left? Totally normal.”
“At the Agri–Science Institute, we might not have much, but we sure as hell have crops.”
“That’s what we do, after all. We live and breathe plants!”
“So, seriously–don’t sweat it!”
“I’m not nervous. I just think this is hilarious!” Josie couldn’t hold it back anymore. She burst into a fit of laughter.
