“How do you even know about her?” Lily asked, sounding jealous. “You’re not… into her, are you?”
Cyrus almost laughed at the absurdity.
Humans are a trip.
Why does everything have to be about romance?
Can’t we just be enemies?
Lily pouted, her voice dripping with bitterness. “Yeah, fine, she’s pretty. So what? She stole from the sanctuary and lied about it. She’s nothing but a common thief!”
Cyrus just stared at her, speechless.
Stealing? That’s what she’s worried about?
Humans have the weirdest priorities.
“I don’t care about any of that,” Cyrus said. “Whether she’s hot or not isn’t my business. I just want to know how strong she is. That’s
it.”
Cyrus meant every word. He was being dead serious.
But to Lily, it sounded like he was trying to clear the air, like he was desperate to prove he didn’t have a thing for Josie. To her, it felt like he was flirting.
Lily’s face softened, a shy blush creeping up her neck. “Oh! I get it. Well, she’s a Rank–4 Super–the highest level anyone’s reached so far.”
“I haven’t heard anything about her being close to a breakthrough lately.”
“By the
way, what’s your ability? What rank are you?”
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to get in your business,” she added quickly. “It’s just that housing and perks are assigned based on your rank.”
“High–level Supers have different perks,” she explained.
“Oh? What kind of pull does a Level 4 have in this sanctuary?” Cyrus asked.
“A Tier–4? Man, they basically own the place. Even the base leaders have to kiss their ass,” Lily said, her voice dropping with envy. “If I were Tier–4, I’d be calling all the shots. I’d have whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it.”
“And what’s your rank?” Cyrus asked.
“L.. I just hit Tier–2. I’m only here to farm some merit points,” Lily said, lowering her voice to a whisper. “Look, I’m only telling you this, so don’t go spreading it around. My dad told me that anyone who signed up for this op gets a guaranteed merit bonus, no matter how much they actually do or how weak their powers are.”
“Once I rack up enough merit points, I’m getting a real government job!” “Then I won’t have to go out on these shitty field missions and suffer anymore.” “I’ll just be chilling in an office. The pay, the perks–everything will be top–tier.” “And it won’t get in the way of me getting married and starting a family later.”
Lily finished her sentence and stole a shy glance at Cyrus.
That one look was all it took. She was already daydreaming about their future kids–they’d be freaking gorgeous, the most beautiful
kids in the world.
