A Tier–7 Undead Core was worlds apart from the lower–level ones.
It was crystal clear, shining just like a gemstone.
Most people would mistake it for a jewel and set it in a ring or necklace.
But Josie knew exactly what she was looking at.
This wasn’t a gem. This was an Undead Core.
But here was the problem.
Her mom had passed away when Josie was still just a kid.
That meant over a decade ago, her mother already had an Undead Core. And not just any core–a Tier–7 Alpha core.
How was that even possible? It didn’t make any sense.
Something didn’t add up.
A wave of doubt crashed over Josie.
The world felt wrong–like everything was flipped upside down and the natural order had been trashed.
She took a sharp breath, forcing herself to keep it together.
She had questions. A lot of them. And Arthur was going to answer every single one.
Like, who was her mother, really? Where did she actually come from?
She’d grown up believing her mom was just an orphan.
But even orphans have a history. People don’t just appear out of thin air.
“Arthur, get up. We’re talking,” Josie said. Her voice was cold. “I want everything. Everything about my mother. Start to finish. Don’t leave out a single damn detail.”
Arthur stared at her, eyes wide with suspicion. He couldn’t tell if her sudden shift in tone was a good sign or a death sentence.
When he didn’t move, Josie realized being nice was a waste of time. You couldn’t give the Old Man an inch. She grabbed him, hauled him up by the collar, and swept her leg across the table-
Crash!
A meal that people would literally kill for in this wasteland hit the floor, shattered and wasted.
She slammed Arthur onto the dining table, looming over him like a predator pinning down its prey.
Arthur’s entire body started to shake.
This was bad. She was terrifying.
“I ask, you answer,” Josie snapped, done with his games. “Who was my mother? How did you meet her? Where did she come from? Give me every single detail about the first time you met. Don’t leave anything out!”
Arthur took a shaky breath, racking his brain. “She was twenty–three when I met her,” he stammered. “It was at a career fair.”

“The second she showed up, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. I found out later she wasn’t looking for a job–she was there to hire people for her own company.”
