Chapter 243
“When we got married, we just grabbed the marriage certificate and had a quick dinner with some coworkers. That was it. Done.”
“Look, I admit it–I’m a scumbag. I went after your mother for the wrong reasons. But the way she acted… it never sat right with me.”
“I always felt like she didn’t give a damn about me. I could’ve spent every night partying and sleeping around, and she wouldn’t have blinked. It was like she just needed me for one thing: to give her a child. She just needed you.”
“Your mom started fading right after you were born. I spent a fortune on doctors, but she never got better. She was always just… wasting
away.”
“I know, I’m a piece of shit. While she was pregnant with you, I was already seeing your stepmom. That’s why June is here. But your mom was so cold, so distant… I was angry, so I-” Arthur caught the look on Josie’s face and shut his mouth.
“Keep talking.” Josie tapped the table. Her face was unreadable.
“Once you were born, she lived for you and nothing else. She stopped caring about me entirely. That’s why I got reckless. I let June and Sylvia show up right under her nose.”
“I’ll admit… her death had something to do with them. When she saw them, she snapped. She started screaming-”
“Wrong! It’s all wrong! How can there be two daughters?!“”
“If there are two daughters, then who… who is the one with the Great Destiny?“”
“Then she started coughing up blood. Right there. We rushed her to the ER.”
“She didn’t last long. She died shortly after.”
“Before she died, she told me to give this to you,” Arthur whispered. “It looked so beautiful… I figured it had to be worth a fortune. So I
hid it. I never told you about it.”
Josie took a long, deep breath.
Her head was spinning.
She knew it for sure now–something was seriously off about her mother.
She couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was, but the whole thing felt weird. It was a total paradox.
Her mother felt like an outsider who had just dropped into this world–like a spectator who knew the entire script and decided to jump
in and change the ending.
She’d said her daughter was “The One Favored by Fate“.
Was she talking about Josie?
But then she’d panicked. It’s all wrong! How can there be two daughters?
Did she mean that in the previous life, June had stolen everything and played the part of the Main Character?
And in this life, Josie had moved first, snatched that luck away from June, and taken the lead for herself.
Was that it?
But how the hell could her mother have known any of that?

And then there was that Tier–7 Undead Core.
Josie was one hundred percent sure of one thing: that core belonged to the future. It shouldn’t exist in the here and now.

If a Tier–7 Alpha had really been around years ago, there’s no way it would’ve stayed low. A monster like that wouldn’t just hide in a corner; it would’ve come out swinging and turned the world into a bloodbath long ago.
