Chapter 270
Cyrus left Fort City,” Josie said, her eyes dark with worry. “Thave no idea where the hell he went, but I’ve got a bad feeling. Lie’s our there somewhere. leveling up in secret.”
“Leveling up in secret?” Zane thought about it for a long moment before his face went pale. Realization hit him like a freight traf not trying to use radiation to level up, is he? How would he even know about that? That’s insane! If a nuke goes off, then…”
“Then everyone in the blast sone is toast,” Josie finished for him. “Even Supers can’t tank radiation poisoning. At best, they just die slower than Norms. At worst? They don’t die at all. They just live in pure agony for the rest of their lives.”
“That’s why I have to beat him to it. I need to grab every nuke and every scrap of radioactive material before he gets his hands on them.”
“I don’t think he can actually find any warheads,” Zane said, his brow furrowed. “Nukes aren’t like regular ammo. They’re locked down tighe.
The only reason I got my hands on these was a total fluke. For anyone else, it’s practically impossible.”
“Besides, setting one off is complicated. It’s not like a bullet-you can’t just pull a trigger and expect it to go bang.*
“I hope you’re right,” Josie said. “But the warheads-do you know exactly where they are?”
Zane shook his head. “No way. I was just a Spec Ops captain. My clearance wasn’t high enough for those kinds of secrets. But I can take a damn good guess.”
“The Northwest?” Josie’s eyes sharpened as the pieces clicked. “Three months before the world went to hell, when people started waking up with powers, the brass wouldn’t have just sat on their hands. They would’ve moved the dangerous stuff to the most secure spot they had.* “Exactly,” Zane said. “There’s a master command center out there. They can hit any target on the globe from that one spot.”
“But I don’t think they saw this coming. The undead… they’re way beyond what anyone planned for.”
“Everything just spiraled out of control in an instant.”
“We’re cut off here, so we don’t know what’s happening with the higher-ups. But look at Haven City. It’s a safe bet most cities are in the same boat.”
“Fort City is only still standing because you’re here to hold the line.”
“Other places? they don’t have a natural-born beast like you.”
“Josie, you’re just too powerful.”
“The rest of Blue Owl? We’re not even in your league.”
Josie nodded in agreement. “You’re right. The outbreak is about to hit its peak. I don’t know how long a small base like ours can last against waves of those things. We need to grind and level up. Now.”
“We have to stay one step ahead of the Undead.”
“It’s the only way we survive.”
“Once an Undead King evolves, killing him will be damn near impossible.”
They spent the next hour talking strategy and trying to pinpoint where those nukes might be stashed.
But while they were guessing, Cyrus had already tracked one down.
