h had been nearly a year since the apocalyper hit
Everything that used to be the bustle, the crowds, the life was just gone.
Massive highways were being swallowed whole by runaway vegetation.
Thickets of weeds and thorns burst through the asphalt, tearing the once-smooth roads to pieces.
And these were just the normal plants. Not even the mutated ones.
It just went to show how fast nature could take back what was hers.
Once the human footprint vanishes, nature takes over. It wastes no time reclaiming the world.
The members of the Blue Owl Squad stared out the windows, stunned into silence.
Hudson couldn’t help himself. “Ms. Quinn, is there anyone even left out there? I mean, outside the bases, is there any room for people to serually live anymore?”
“Right now? There’s probably a few,” Josie replied coolly. She sat in the passenger seat with her arms crossed, looking relaxed. “People in the cities lived meal-to-meal. They didn’t have stockpiles. When the food stopped, they had to crawl to the bases or starve.”
“But the folks out in the country? They’re used to hoarding. Most of them have enough food stashed away to last a year or two, maybe more.
“If they hide well, stay off the undead’s radar, and don’t piss off the mutant plants/or animals, they can hang on for a while.”
“But not many of them make it.”
“The undead can smell blood from miles away. To them, human flesh is like a five-st
-star steak. The scent pulls them in like a magnet.”
“If they’ve got a couple of Supers with them, they might last a bit longer. If not? They’re dead men walking. It’s just a matter of time.”
“So even the ones in the suburbs eventually have to band together. There’s no other way to survive.”
“Thinking you can just hide in your house forever? That’s a pipe dream.”
“And that’s not even counting the Deep Freeze,” Josie added. “They won’t stand a chance once that hits.”
“Unless they’ve got a deep-ass bunker to crawl into.”
“But even then, how long can you really stay buried?”
Hudson nodded, the realization hitting him. “So, you’re saying if anyone’s still alive out here, they’re definitely running in packs.”
“Yeah.” As soon as the word left Josie’s mouth, someone yelled, “Look! There’s a town up

Sure enough, a ghost town sat on the horizon, looking raw and abandoned.
“Let’s check it out,” Josie said. “If nothing goes sideways, we’re crashing there tonight.”
“Copy that!” The others nodded, and the drivers floored it.
Nowhere was truly safe anymore-everyone knew that.
But a roof over your head still beat sleeping under the stars every time.
Everyone needed that piece of mind, however fake it was.
They all knew a few thin walls wouldn’t stop the Mutants or the Undead if they really wanted in, but it was better than nothing.
The convoy tore toward the town.
