Chapter 302
Josie reached into her spatial storage and pulled out a box of cold medicine. She held it out. “A gift.”
The man stared at the box, his eyes widening. He was floored.
No
one gave away medicine this valuable as a “peace offering.” Not unless they were a major player.
But more importantly, they saw how she did it.
She’d pulled those meds out of thin air,
She was a Spatial Super.
Her aura was heavy, too–lethal. She definitely wasn’t some norm.
This whole crew clearly took orders from her.
You don’t lead a team across a post–apocalyptic wasteland if you’re a pushover. This woman was dangerous.
The middle–aged man realized this instantly. He nodded and took the medicine.
The others followed his lead, finally lowering their guns.
“Who are you looking for?” he asked.
“Sean. He’s in his late forties or early fifties,” Josie said. “He was a research scientist before everything went south.”
She pulled out a grainy photo and held it up. “This is him.
The man squinted at it, his brow furrowing. He took the photo and passed it to his crew. “Pass it around. Anyone recognize him?
They all took a look. One by one, they shook their heads.
“Sorry,” the man said, handing it back. “Never seen the guy. He’s not here.
Josie didn’t let the disappointment show. “Alright. Where’s the Newport City Sanctuary? Can I go in to look for him there?”
“You can,” the man said, his eyes hardening. “But there’s a catch. Full–body inspection. You know the deal–Tier–5 Alphas look exactly like us now. You can’t rely on scent or ‘vibes‘ to pick them out of a crowd.”
“Everyone who enters the Sanctuary goes through a complete physical.”
“No check, no entry. No exceptions.”
Josie nodded. “Fair enough. I get it.”
Looking at how on–edge they were with strangers, she could tell they’d already learned the hard way. They’d been burned by a Tier–5
before.
It meant Newport City was already crawling with high–level Alphas, and those things had clearly done some serious damage to the local survivors.
People didn’t get this paranoid unless they’d watched their friends get slaughtered by a monster wearing a human face.
That was fine by her. At least they weren’t rookies.
Only the ones who’ve been burned know to fear the fire.

And in this hellscape, you could never be too careful.
Josie and her crew followed the group toward the Sanctuary.

Josie looked up at the wall. It was a mess–cracked, scarred, and patched up so many times it looked like a jagged puzzle of concrete and scrap metal. She let out a heavy breath.
Newport City had it way worse than Fort City.
The battle scars were everywhere.
You could tell they’d been through hell. This wasn’t just a skirmish; it was a goddamn war zone.
“The undead are running wild here,” Josie said. “Aren’t there any mutants around to keep them in check?
“There used to be,” the man sighed. “But the mutants? They’re just as bad as the undead.”
“Being human right now… it’s a nightmare.”
“We’re just snacks for the undead or lunch for the mutants. We’re at the bottom of the food chain.”
“Newport City Sanctuary used to have over ten million people. But after hit after hit? We’re down to barely two million. That’s it. That’s everyone left in the entire city.”
“In this shithole, just staying alive is a full–time job. Who has the energy to think about a future?”
“It’s been a year. We haven’t had a single baby born.”
“And every kid under the age of three? They’re gone. All of them.”
“Most of the mutants around here are sea creatures. They’re vicious as hell, but since they can’t stay on land, we actually get a bit of a
breather.”
