Chapter 303
“Simple enough. We just won’t go to the beach,” Josie said.
“As for the mutant flora, there’s plenty of it. But they couldn’t hack it against the undead. They got pushed out to the sticks” “Didn’t you run into any on your way in?”
Josie went quiet.
She actually had.
But the mutant plants were terrified of Lirio’s scent on her. They had all stayed far away,
She wasn’t sure what the little guy had done, but Josie could feel her Plant–type energy surging. It was a massive boost.
Even without using her powers in combat, her levels were slowly climbing on their own.
That was definitely Lirio’s doing.
At this rate, she might even hit Tier–6 by the time she made it back to Fort City.
That would be huge.
“We saw some,” Josie said, keeping it vague. “So, you’re saying it’s just humans and the undead in the city now?”

“Pretty much,” the man sighed. “A Tier–5 Apex Alpha showed up here–a Pyro type. He was a monster. He snuck into the Sanctuary under a fake identity and slaughtered over a million people. If we hadn’t fought back like hell, the whole place would’ve been wiped off the map.”
“But the cost was brutal.”
“We lost way too many people.”
“Looking back, maybe we needed that wake–up call. Everyone in the base is a lot more humble now. Cautious.”
“And since the population tanked, all that political backstabbing and drama we used to have? Most of it just vanished.”
“We keep fighting each other, and humanity’s going extinct. Simple as that.”
Josie nodded. “You’re right. Survival means dropping the bullshit and facing the real enemy together.”
By the time he finished, we hit the main gates. It was time for the scanners.
The setup looked like a TSA checkpoint at an airport. One walk through that gate and they could see every organ in your body on a
screen.
Human guts and Undead guts don’t look anything alike.
That’s the one thing those monsters can’t fake, no matter how hard they try.
Josie and the crew went through one by one. No flags. They cleared security and stepped into the base.
It was a hell of a lot better than the wasteland outside, for sure.
But the guy was right–the place felt hollow. Dead.
These blocks were originally built to house ten million people.

Now, with barely two million left, the place felt way too big. It was like living in a ghost town.
The streets were mostly empty.

The few people out there kept their heads down, scurrying along like they were being hunted. Their faces were sallow, skin clinging to their bones.
They were starving. Plain and simple. You could see the malnutrition in their eyes.
“This is the intake office for newcomers. I can’t go any further than this,” the middle–aged guy said to Josie. “Good luck. I hope the person you’re looking for is still drawing breath.”
“Appreciate it.” Josie handed him another pack of cookies–a tip for the guide.
The guy hesitated for a split second before grabbing the gift.
Josie stepped inside the office and found the place packed.
It wasn’t just a registration center; it was the mission hub.
Most of the locals were here to pick up jobs, grinding for credits just to keep themselves fed.
A massive screen flickered on the wall, constantly scrolling through available tasks, names, and addresses of the people who had taken them.
It looked efficient. Josie walked up to the desk. “I need to register. And I want to post a ‘missing person‘ ad.”
