Chapter 376.
eased.
Zane Shaw was already at the gate, looking like he had been waiting for ages. When he saw the team return, the crushing weight in his chest finally
“What happened?” Josie asked the second she saw him. “Why does everyone look so strange?”
“Let’s talk inside,” Zane said. He quickly checked her over “Was the mission successful? Did you get the goods? Did you find the man?”
“Yes, everything went smoothly,” Josie replied.
“Then that explains it!” Zane walked side-by-side with Josie toward the main building, lowering his voice: “A few days ago, the Fort City Base suddenly turned against us.”
Turned against us?” Josie looked at him, confused. “What do you mean?”
“The base command claims you’ve been colluding with people inside the base to perform illegal human experiments,” Zane explained. “They’ve produced a series of ‘evidence’ proving that you are the mastermind behind it all.”
“They claim that the agonized wails heard from certain corners of the base are from the experiments you’ve been running.*
“The scientists from the lab have all stepped forward to testify against you. They say they were acting under your orders.”
“They even claim you drove Cyrus Finch out of the base on a false pretext because you were afraid a Psychic Superpower user would discover your secrets!”
“Now, the entire base believes this narrative. The administration has contacted us several times, demanding that you leave Fort City.*
“What kind of bullshit is that?” Josie stopped in her tracks, staring at Zane in shock. “The lab staff testified against me? Do they have any actual proof** “Apparently, they released several photos. They’ve been verified as unaltered. They show you standing right there with the scientists,” Zane answered. “I had our people check them. The photos are real, but they’re clearly candid shots.”
“To put it simply, you were set up. They waited for scientists to get near you and then took the photos. From a certain angle, it looks like you’re all in the middle of a meeting.”
Josie let out a sharp, angry laugh. “Fine. If that’s how the base wants to play, so be it. What else did they say?”
“They gave us one month to pack up and leave Fort City. If we don’t, the base will treat us as enemies and launch an unconditional saturation bombardment,” Zane said. “Also, several Tier-6 Supers have appeared the main base. I’m sorry… I’m not a match for them.”
Josie’s expression turned deathly cold.
This wasn’t entirely unexpected. If June Quinn could reach Tier-6, it wasn’t surprising that others had as well. No doubt they were all “hollow” Supers who had forced their advancement using Undead Cores.
However, even if their power was unstable, a Tier-6 was still a Tier-6. They could stiff suppress lower-ranked Supers with ease.
T While Josie was away, Zane had been the only one holding the line at Quinshaw Base. It must have been incredibly difficult for him. To face that kind of harassment while protecting so many non-combatants was a monumental task.
Josie patted Zane on the shoulder. “You’ve worked hard while I was gone.”
“Hard? It’s what I should have done. Quinshaw Base is my responsibility too,” Zane said. Despite the gravity of the situation, he couldn’t help but beam at Josie’s praise.
“Ms. Quinn, you’re finally back!” Winnie Lone came running out of the building like a whirlwind, she threw her arms around lose and began to wal. It you hadn’t come back, we would have been kicked out! Waaaaah! Those people at the base are so evil!”
“How could they throw so much dirt on your name!”
