Doomsday Revenge: Payback Time (Josie) novel Chapter 38

Josie headed back to her luxury apartment complex, ready to pack up and get the hell out of the city.

But before she could even clear the alleyway outside the school gates, a massive shadow stepped directly into her path.

Excuse me. Sorry to bother you,a deep, gravelly voice echoed.

Josie stopped. A man was standing dead center in the narrow alley.

He was massive, standing at least sixfootthree. He had sharp, chiseled features and a steady, assessing gaze. He stood tall, his weight perfectly balanced everything about his posture and his unmarked tactical gear screamed elite military training.

Josie looked him up and down. Her eyes went dead. Yeah?

Let me introduce myself. I’m Captain Zane Shaw, Special Ops,he said, his voice calm but commanding. I was on a rescue mission perimeter sweep just now when I caught a glimpse of the elementary school-

He didn’t even get to finish his sentence.

Josie moved.

She didn’t hesitate. She didn’t ask questions. In the apocalypse, you don’t let a heavily armed stranger finish his pitch.

She lunged, closing the gap in a fraction of a second. As her hand whipped toward his face, her Tier1 Metallic power flared. A sixinch, razorsharp steel dagger materialized directly into her palm from thin air.

She swung it in a vicious, blinding backhand arc, aiming straight to open his throat.

Zane’s reflexes were inhuman. He snapped his head back, the cold edge of the blade whistling less than an inch past his Adam’s apple.

But Josie didn’t miss a beat. The first strike was a primer.

She smoothly flipped the dagger in her grip, using her forward momentum to drive the blade straight toward his heart.

Her transitions were seamless. Brutal. Flawless. A normal man wouldn’t have even seen her move before the blade pierced his chest.

Zane brought his heavily armored forearm down, slamming it violently against her wrist to parry the strike.

But a split second later, a second steel dagger materialized in Josie’s empty left hand. She drove it upward, burying the tip directly against the tactical olate over his spine, right behind his heart.

One shove. That was all it would take to sever his spinal cord.

Zane froze. He had lost. Fair and square. In less than three seconds.

Staring into her dead, unblinking eyeseyes that completely intended to kill himZane held his hands up slowly. Whoa. Take it easy! I’m not here to Fight.

He swallowed hard, feeling the cold point of the blade pressing through his gear. No bad blood. But honestly? I’m impressed. You’re lethal.

Josie just stared at him, her face a mask of absolute indifference.

Zane was gorgeous. Rugged, dangerous, with a heavy Alpha presence. But Josie didn’t give a damn.

In her past life, she had slaughtered plenty of pretty faces in the fighting pits. Good looks didn’t stop a bullet, and they sure as hell didn’t mean sht in the apocalypse.

You’ve got a Spatial superpower, right?Zane kept talking, his eyes locked on hers, completely unfazed by the blade at his back. I saw those supplies. You waved your hand, andpoofgone. I want you on our rescue team. We desperately need secure logistics. Don’t worry, you won’t work for free You’ll be highly compensated.

Josie’s eyes stayed icecold, but she slowly pulled the dagger back.

He was military. Killing a Special Ops Captain would bring a massive, heavily armed headache down on her head, and she didn’t have time for a turf war with the army.

As for him seeing her space? She didn’t care.

She couldn’t hide her powers forever. Who the hell would want to physically haul a hundredpound greatsword around all day? She had only kept the space a secret from June to mentally torture her.

Merci

Not interested,Josie said, her voice dropping to a freezing whisper. Stay out of my way, or the next blade goes through your eye. I mean it.

Right in front of his face, Josie casually tossed the steel dagger into the air. It vanished into the void before it even hit the ground.

Her entire vibe was pure, unfiltered arrogance. Yeah, I have a spatial vault. No, I’m not helping you. What the fck are you going to do about it?

She turned her back on him and walked away, her combat boots fading down the alley without a second glance.

Zane didn’t move. He watched her go, his eyes narrowing into a sharp, calculated squint.

Boss, a soldier materialized from the shadows, his rifle lowered.

Run a full background check on her,Zane ordered, his voice low. The way she kills is way too practicedshe’s definitely seen real blood. But her moves are raw. Savage. Not like a trained hitman. She’s a wild card.
