Chapter 385.
“Sean, explain this,” Josie Quinn said, pointing at Sean Voss. “Give them a breakdown of the earthquake magnitudes Understood Sean stood up and pulled over a large whiteboard, marking the differences between each seismic rank. Earthquakes are generally categorized into ten magnitudes,” he began
“Magnitude 1: It’s unfelt. We won’t feel a thing. Only inruments can record the race of the tremors.”
“Magnitude 2: A few people sitting still indoors might feel something, but most wont notice.”
Magnitude 3: Most people indoors can feel it. Doors and windows rattle slightly, and hanging objects will sway.”
“Magnitude 4: Everyone indoors feels it, and most people outdoors do too. Doors, windows, and roofs will shake. Dust falls, cracks appear in plaster, and hanging objects sway violently. Glassware on tables will rattle.”
“Magnitude 5: People panic and flee. Tiles fall from roofs, and walls are damaged. Cracks appear on riverbanks and in loose soil. Sand boils and water sprouts emerge from saturated sand layers.”
“Magnitude 6: Walls are damaged; there is moderate destruction. Riverbanks suffer landslides. More cracks appear in loose soil and sand layers, and chimneys are damaged.”
“Magnitude 7: The ground shakes and jolts. It becomes difficult to walk. Buildings suffer medium damage. Cracks appear in hard-surfaced roads, which I may twist and deform.”
“Magnitude 8: It’s impossible to stand steady. People walking will fall, losing control of their bodies. Buildings suffer severe damage. Cracks multiply, bedrock splits, and massive landslides and collapses occur. Many buildings will collapse.”
“Magnitude 9: Even people on bicycles will be thrown off instantly. Scarcely one in ten buildings will remain standing. The ground splits and mountains crumble. Arched bridges snap.”
“Magnitude 10… Cataclysm. Everything on the surface will cease to exist in an instant.”
“I’ll give you some historical context to help you visualize,” Sean continued, pushing his glasses up. “The Great Quake of 76 was a 78 magnitude, with 240,000 deaths. The 2008 Great Earthquake was an 8.0, with over 80,000 deaths. Report finished.”
Josie nodded and signaled for Sean to sit back down.
She turned to the rest of the room. “This mega-quake is currently brewing. I don’t know exactly when it will strike, but I do know it “will” come. It’s inevitable.”
“Magnitude 10?” Hudson Knox’s face was deathly pale. “Obliteration?”
Josie nodded solemnly. “Yes. Obliteration. At least Magnitude 10, if not higher.”
