Chapter 386
Chapter 386.
“Josie didn’t give them time to dwellen the silence. “What we need to consider now is where to go. We need a place that can survive the earthquake. avoid the Undead hordes and Mutants, and allow our entire group to arrive safely.”
“If it were just me and the Blue Owl Squad, we’d be fine. But our team includes many elderly members”
“Since you chose me, trust me, and follow me, I cannot leave you behind.”
“If we leave, we leave together. Not a single person gets left behind!”
Josie’s words brought some of the elderly scientists to the brink of tears. Part of their silence earlier had been the secret fear that they would be newed as dead weight and abandoned.
They were old. In a world where the strong preyed on the weak, aged animals were usually cast out by the pack. Even in human history, during times of extreme resource scarcity, the elderly were sometimes left in the wilderness to fend for themselves.
It didn’t matter that they were scientists or “treasures of human wisdom.” When people struggled just to breathe, no one cared about a PhD. The apocalypse was just another jungle.
Josie’s promise had smoothed over their deepest anxieties. They were deeply moved. Even at their age, they didn’t want to die. If there was a chance to live, who would choose death?
Her words were a shot of adrenaline. They were now ready to give her everything they had.
An elderly
man sitting in the corner spoke up slowly. “Chief Quinn, I have something to say.”
“Please, go ahead,” Josie said with a nod.
“My name is Grant,” the man introduced himself. “I have a double doctorate in Plant Biology and Geography. While my experience in geology isn’t my primary specialty, I have some familiarity with the field.”
Professor Grant was being modest. In the academic world, “studied extensively” usually meant he knew nearly as much as a professional
“Go on,” Josie encouraged.
“I suggest we head toward Sierra City.” Professor Grant stood up, walked to the whiteboard, and sketched out a map. “Take a look at the layout of our
country.”
“We are currently in this position. As Chief Quinn said, when the earthquake hits, Fort City will be affected. In fact, it’s a certainty.” “We are far too close to the river mouth and the coast.”
“At this location, never mind a Magnitude 10-even a Magnitude 9 would be a death sentence.”
“Historically, the regions with the fewest earthquake records include the Northern States, the Eastern Coast, the Central and Southern Provinces, the Sierra City.”
“These areas generally sit on stable blocks within the Eurasian plate, far from active zones like the Ring of Fire. Historically records of strong tremors
are rare or non-existent there.”
“Logically, our current location should be safe from massive quakes as well. However, a mega-tsunami is a different story
“The other stable regions are similar-while geologically sound, the risk of a tsunami is too high. We must abandon those options.”
“I recommend Sierra City because it sits in the stable zone of The Sierra Basin. Destructive earthquakes are incredibly rare there
“More importantly, Sierra City is in the heartland. Even with a massive earthquake and a megatsunami, the impact wont reach that far inland for while.”
