Even though the snakes were desperate for human meat, survival was more important.

Half an hour later, the millions of snakes had vanished without a trace.

Josie Quinn and Cyrus simultaneously let out a sigh of relief. This ordeal had started as abruptly as it had ended.

Josie didn’t have time to rest. She immediately grabbed her bullhorn and addressed the crowd. “Listen up! I just got word that the ground we’re standing on is an active volcano. No, I don’t know exactly where the crater is, but if a major earthquake hits, it’s going to erupt. Those snakes went into a frenzy because they sensed this place is about to be swallowed by molten lava.”

“Snakes are naturally sensitive to these things. Their panicked flight tells us everything we need to know.”

“We have to get out of here even faster!”

“After all, when it comes to lava, if you touch it, you’re dead!”

Before the others could even process the news, the team from the Agri–Science Institute nodded frantically. “Yes, she’s right! we must leave immediately! If an earthquake of magnitude 8 or 9 hits, lava will definitely surge up from the depths. It’ll be a death trap!”

“What are you all standing around for? Everyone back in the cars! Floor it!” Josie commanded. “Starting today, we’ll rotate drivers in shifts so the vehicles never have to stop. I want every single one of you to floor it and speed up! No stopping for the night! Go, go, go,

go!”

Everyone turned and sprinted back to their vehicles.

The cars shot forward like arrows released from a bow. Accelerators were pressed to the floor. The entire convoy raced ahead as if they had gone mad.

As usual, Josie and Cyrus sat in the lead vehicle, clearing obstacles for the convoy behind them. Thankfully, Josie’s Infinite Vault had no limit, or she would have had nowhere to put all the debris she was sweeping off the road.

While she said there would be no rest, that wasn’t entirely accurate. They still had to stop briefly for bathroom breaks and meals; they couldn’t just hold it forever.

Sean Voss used these short breaks to run constant tests.

Whirrr, whirrr, whirrr.

The printer spat out the latest seismic wave readings.

“How is it looking?” Josie asked, leaning in to check the status.

“Base Commander, the situation isn’t good,” Sean said, pointing at the recorded data. “We might not have enough time.”

“Is the earthquake coming?” Josie asked.

“Most likely,” Sean replied. “One day at the earliest, three days at the latest.”

“Can we outrun the lava zone?” Josie pressed.

“We should be able to,” Sean said. “I’ve discussed the local geology with the professors. The volcanic belt isn’t that massive. It’s huge for a swarm of snakes, but for us in vehicles, it’s manageable. However, the ground will likely fissure. We need to find high ground or a wide, open area to take cover.”

“After multiple discussions, we estimate the earthquake magnitude will be between Magnitude 6 and 8. It shouldn’t reach Magnitude
