Chapter 530.
How long had it even been? When Josie fought that mutant goat before, they hadn’t reached this level of sophistication. In just a few months, they had leapfrogged thousands-if not tens of thousands-of years of evolutionary experience.
If they kept evolving at this rate, would they be hand-crafting atomic bombs next?
The thought sent a wave of despair through the human leaders.
The world was trying to force humanity into a corner.
The Undead horde lacked a central commander on the field. Faced with the organized tactics of the mutant animals, they were shredded They were routed almost instantly.
After several tactical maneuvers and flanking strikes from the animals, the Undead force was decimated. Realizing the situation was hopeless, several high-ranking zombies led the remaining survivors in a hasty retreat.
The mutant animals naturally took over the territory previously held by the Undead.
The humans watched in horror as the animals planted a crude flag-bearing a single, simple symbol-to mark their new territory.
The collective intake of breath was audible.
How was this any different from human behavior?
“Chief Quinn,” Nadia Neville said, her voice trembling. If I lead The Peaks Base to pledge allegiance to you… would you be willing to take us
in?”
“Nadia, what nonsense are you talking about?” Malcolm snapped, his eyes flashing with panic. “Josie’s territory is tiny! How could she possibly fit all your people and supplies?”
“I’ve already told you,” Malcolm continued. “You can come to the Official Base anytime. I promise I won’t touch your people or your resources. Once the crisis passes, you’re free to leave!”
Nadia ignored Malcolm completely. She kept her eyes on Josie.”I know you have an Infinite Vault that can hold anything you want. I know The Peaks Base has a lot of people, but we can make it work. We can squeeze. Your mountain might not be huge, but if we’re smart about it, we can fit!”
“And we aren’t just a bunch of helpless Norms. I have over a hundred thousand Supers who can handle security and patrols.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t let you do this for free. I’ll pay whatever service fees you require!”
Being snubbed so publicly made Malcolm’s face turn an ugly shade of purple. He let out a sharp huff but fell silent.
Josie looked at Nadia, then at Malcolm. She turned back to Nadia.”You trust me that much?”
“I do!” Nadia said firmly. “Right now, you’re the only one I trust. You’re the only Tier-7 Super. If even you can’t stand against these mutant animals, then humanity should just stop struggling and wait for the end.”
“But I believe you won’t just wait to die. I believe you have the ability and the strength to break this stalemate!”
“Besides,” Nadia added, “we’re both women. You might scheme for my resources, but you won’t manipulate my feelings!”
Josie sighed.”I have to go back and discuss this with my team. This is a massive undertaking, and it’s going to be a headache. You all should use this time to think it over carefully as well.”
“After seeing this, I’m not really in the mood for a banquet anymore.”
“Chief Fletcher, my apologies, but we’ll be taking our leave now.”
Felix Fletcher didn’t have the heart to try and make them stay. He simply nodded.”Let’s keep in touch. I’ll notify you immediately if anything happens on my end. Regardless of our differences, we are all human. We’re on the same side.”
“If Chief Quinn comes up with a solution, please, grant us your guidance/
“The Rivers Base won’t let you down.”
Josie nodded. “We’ll see. Goodbye, everyone.”
