Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 1074

Krystina was in Fiji, leading her team on a company retreat. When she got the call, she paused to think. “Probably another two days. Why, what’s going on?”

Emmy’s voice dropped. “I need a favor. Could you use your contacts back home and help me check on James? He went to the border on a mission, but I haven’t heard from him in almost two weeks.”

Krystina’s tone turned serious. “Alright, I’ll start asking around. Don’t stress. That guy’s a special forces legend. He’ll be okay.”

“Thanks, Krystina. I really appreciate it,” Emmy said.

...

Meanwhile, on the sands of Fiji, Krystina stood beneath a coconut tree, frowning deeply. She’d already made five calls in a row, reaching out to friends in the military and contacts in Southeast Asia. The only thing anyone could tell her was that the border area was chaos. Multiple factions were fighting, communications towers had been blown up, and the whole region was in turmoil. No one had any real details.

Krystina thought about who else she could try. She turned and glanced over at a lounge chair behind her. Sylvia was stretched out, sunglasses on, soaking up the sun in a bikini.

Krystina marched over and gave the chair leg a nudge with her foot. “That’s enough sun for you. You’re going to end up toasted.”

Sylvia took off her sunglasses with a sigh. “What is it now? Who’s got Mr. Carter all worked up?”

“It’s not me, it’s Mr. Lincoln,” Krystina replied. “Let’s be useful for a minute. Give Steve a call.”

Sylvia blinked. “Why would I call him? I don’t even have his number.”

Krystina crossed her arms and gave her a look. “Don’t play dumb. I saw what happened after the last party. Steve got in your car. No one’s buying that nothing’s going on.”

Sylvia looked away, a little embarrassed to be caught. Krystina’s expression softened a little, but her voice was firm. “James has been missing for two weeks. Mr. Lincoln’s worried sick. I’ve tried every source I have, but no one knows anything solid. Steve’s his best friend, and his detective agency is connected. If anyone knows what’s up, it’s him.”

There was a click, the sound of a lighter, then a long inhale. Steve was probably lighting a cigarette.

A few seconds passed before he spoke, sounding grumpy. “Mr. Lincoln already called me. I can’t reach him either.”

Sylvia paused, surprised by how calm he sounded. “Aren’t you worried?”

That was his best friend, and he was missing, possibly in danger. How could Steve even sleep?

“What’s the point of worrying?” Steve let out a sigh, his words cool and matter-of-fact. “It’s normal to lose contact in a place like that. It’s the border, not your backyard. If he was texting every day saying he’s fine, then you’d know something was up.”

He hesitated for a moment, then his voice grew heavier. “The area near the Golden Triangle’s been a war zone lately. Multiple factions are fighting. The signal towers are gone, and even satellite signals are getting jammed. Forget about cell phones, sometimes even military radios don’t work. I don’t think anyone’s going to hear from him for a while.”
