"Okay, got it. I'm hanging up," Sylvia said, phone already halfway to her bag. Before she could end the call, Steve snapped.
"Seriously? Call after call, first thing in the morning? Could you at least check the time difference before waking me up? I pulled an all-nighter. I just fell asleep and then you guys start blowing up my phone."
Sylvia froze, surprised by how harsh he was. Her brow knit in irritation and she fired back, "Mr. Lincoln called you too. Why don't you yell at her? I'm just asking a question for Mr. Carter. Why are you taking it out on me?"
Steve scoffed. "It's not the same. Just hearing your voice pisses me off. Don't call me again."
He hung up. Sylvia stared at her screen, stunned. Sure, she'd gotten used to his sarcasm when they were married. Back then, this kind of attitude was pretty normal. But being humiliated like this, right in front of Krystina, felt like getting slapped.
Krystina shifted awkwardly, not sure what to say. She hadn't expected Steve to treat Sylvia like that.
"Uh..." Krystina finally tried, her voice gentle. "He's probably just cranky from being woken up. Things are rough over there, too. I bet he's just stressed. Try not to take it personally."
Sylvia pressed her lips together and tossed her phone into her bag. "It's fine. He's got issues. I'm used to it."
"Okay, I'll go call Mr. Lincoln back," Krystina said, escaping quickly with her phone.
Sylvia looked out at the shimmering sea, her anger building the longer she thought about it. She knew Steve had snapped at her on purpose. What did she ever do to deserve that?
"Asshole," she muttered under her breath. She swore to herself, if she ever reached out to Steve again, she'd... well, she just wouldn't.
...
She tried to keep things light. "So, how's the company retreat? Fiji must be gorgeous, right?"
Krystina perked up at the mention of Fiji. "Don't worry. The task you gave me is almost done."
Emmy sighed. "Krystina, I told you to go and have fun. Relax a little, will you? Don't spend the whole time working."
Krystina laughed. "Well, I'd just be bored otherwise. Might as well do something. Oh, and guess what..."
She suddenly sounded excited, her voice dropping like she was about to share a secret. "Guess who I ran into at the resort the other day?"
Emmy grinned. "Who? I have no idea. Tell me."
