The farther north they went, the thicker and heavier the air felt. Humidity clung to their skin, turning every breath sticky and warm. Towering tropical plants stretched overhead, their leaves so dense that barely any sunlight managed to slip through. Only a few scattered patches of light danced across the ground.

The path grew tricky underfoot. Moss made the stones slick and tangled vines tried to trip them with every step. Krystina kept moving, though she had to work a little harder now, her sneakers slipping here and there. But her eyes shone with excitement, undeterred by the terrain.

Every now and then, she'd stop. Sometimes she pulled out her laptop to jot down notes, other times she snapped quick photos of the wild landscape with her phone, totally absorbed in her work.

“Ms. Carter!”

A frustrated shout broke through the quiet behind her. Krystina jumped, startled out of her thoughts. She spun around to see Danny hurrying up the trail, his face set in a scowl.

He caught up to her in a few long strides, clearly annoyed. “What are you doing out here? Didn’t you see the warning sign at the entrance? It said ‘No Entry.’ The letters are huge and red. How could you miss that?”

Krystina stared back at him, confused. “Why are you so worked up? I’m not blind, Danny. Of course I saw it.”

“Then why come in?” Danny’s eyes widened, his frustration obvious.

Krystina crossed her arms and stood her ground. “I talked to the director earlier. Once the resort officially opens, they want to turn this whole area into a jungle adventure course.” She paused, glancing around. “So I figured I’d check it out now, make some notes, see what could be improved or if there are any safety issues. That’s not a problem, is it?”

Danny looked at her, utterly exasperated. “Mr. Lincoln sent you here to relax, Krystina. Maybe write about your experience. You’re not supposed to work yourself to exhaustion.”

She gave him a look of pure innocence. “But I am having fun. This is my idea of relaxing. Exploring new places is the best kind of adventure for me.”

When she got busy, she could go three days on nothing but coffee. She’d rip out an IV just to make it to a meeting, even if she had a fever. Once, she ended up in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer, and the first words out of her mouth when she woke up were about the status of a project.

She was too capable for her own good. So capable that everyone forgot she was still just a woman, a little too thin, a little too stubborn.

Danny sighed, his gaze softening as he watched her walk ahead. If she kept this up, her body was going to give out eventually. Someone needed to look after her. She really needed a man who could keep her in check.

Just as that thought crossed his mind, Krystina suddenly cried out. “Ah!”

She stumbled, bending over to grab her right calf. Her face twisted in pain as she sucked in a sharp breath. “Ouch, that hurts!”
