“Actually, we started looking for a spokesperson for the promo video about a month ago. The planning team reached out to several big-name celebrities, but their prices were insane. On top of that, they weren’t easy to work with. They kept making all sorts of demanding requests and adding tough conditions.”

“For a company like Janus Sphere Technologies, just starting out and needing to spend every dollar wisely, it just wasn’t worth it.”

Rupert paused, a hint of admiration coloring his voice. “When Mr. Nelson heard about all this, he just said, ‘Leave it to me.’ Not long after, we got a call from Mercedes’s agent.”

A small smile tugged at Emmy’s lips. James always came through when no one else could. He had this way of making the impossible look easy, always surprising everyone.

Rupert’s voice came through again, this time with real excitement. “We thought we’d have to spend a fortune, since it’s Mercedes, after all. But she turned out to be incredibly reasonable. She didn’t ask for an outrageous fee. In fact, she offered to shoot the promo video for Janus Sphere Technologies for free, as a public service.”

For free?

Emmy blinked, caught off guard. Mercedes was an international superstar, famous for charging by the second. And she agreed to do an ad for free?

“And Mercedes was amazing to work with. No attitude, no drama. She went along with our shooting schedule, didn’t complain once. She even stood under the blazing sun for two hours just to get one shot right.”

“Mr. Lincoln, the shoot was a huge success. The final cut is already in post-production. It should be ready in about half a day. I’ll email it to you first thing tomorrow morning.”

The more Emmy heard, the more intrigued she became. Mercedes seemed nothing like the rumors. There was something genuine about her. Emmy hadn’t met her, but she found herself admiring the woman anyway.

And if James could bring Mercedes in and trust her enough to reveal his connection with Janus Sphere Technologies, then this woman had to be someone special to him.

A warm feeling spread in Emmy’s heart. If James trusted Mercedes, then so would she. If James owed her a favor, so did Emmy.

“I understand,” Emmy said. “Even if she did this as a public service, Janus Sphere Technologies should still show our appreciation. Tell the team to treat her like our most valued partner. Make sure everything is done to the highest standard, and don’t forget holiday gifts from now on.”

Rupert replied right away, “Understood, Mr. Lincoln. I’ll take care of it personally.”

After ending the call, Emmy grabbed a towel and headed into the bathroom. Warm water streamed over her, washing away the day’s exhaustion. She closed her eyes, letting the steam wrap around her.

James, please come back safe. I’m waiting for you.

“Don’t you want to join? It’s our last chance to get in the water before we fly back.”

Krystina stopped. “No, you go ahead and have fun. I have something I need to do.”

She didn’t offer any more explanation and walked off down a smaller path.

Danny stood there, puzzled. He glanced after her, then looked down the path she’d chosen. It was covered in gravel, the plants on both sides growing thicker and wilder. If she kept going, she’d end up near the edge of the forest.

He remembered the guide’s warning about that area. It was still being restored for the ecosystem, full of snakes and bugs, and tourists were absolutely forbidden to wander there alone.

Danny frowned, looking back at the lively pier, then at Krystina’s figure vanishing into the shade.

With a sigh, he called out to a colleague nearby. “Neal, I’m not going! You guys have fun!”

He didn’t wait for an answer. Danny took off at a run, heading after Krystina.
