Krystina’s face was already pale, but now it looked completely drained of color.

She stared at Danny.

There was still a smear of blood at the corner of his mouth, and in the patchy sunlight filtering through the trees, it looked almost too vivid to be real.

He wasn’t wearing his usual black-rimmed glasses. For the dive, he’d switched to contacts, so nothing hid his eyes. They looked deeper than ever, burning with a kind of stubborn determination that scared her.

She started fumbling in her pocket for her phone.
