“Come on, don’t be ridiculous. After all these years working together, we’re the most in-sync team you could find.” She shook her head. “We’re like comrades, partners, maybe even friends. There’s just no way it could ever be romantic.”

A hint of sarcasm crept into her voice. “And even if Danny had a type, it definitely wouldn’t be me.” She let out a laugh that sounded more tired than amused. “You know my story. Divorced, single mom.” She hesitated, remembering. “The divorce was a mess, you remember how ugly that got? Danny was the one running errands for me, helping with the lawsuit. He’s seen me at my lowest.”

She glanced at Sylvia. “If you were him, a bright young assistant with a future ahead, would you fall for someone five years older, already divorced, cheated on, almost killed by her ex?” She tried to keep it light, but it just sounded sad. “And that’s not even mentioning the fact that I used to be hopelessly romantic.”

She leaned in, refusing to let Krystina off easy. “So what if you have a kid? So what if you’ve been divorced? That doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be happy. It’s not like getting older is a crime.”
