A few moments passed before Abyss gave a helpless shrug and sighed, his voice touched with playful resignation. “Ms. Lincoln, you’ve clearly got me beat. I surrender.”
He spread his hands, but there was no trace of frustration in his eyes. If anything, he looked entertained, like he was watching a particularly interesting scene unfold. He turned to John, who was still frozen in shock, and teased, “John, you didn’t set this up on purpose, did you? Hired someone to play along with me just to drive up the project’s value?”
John shook his head frantically. “No, no, I swear! This is just a crazy coincidence. I had no idea Emmy was even in the investment game. I’m so sorry, Mr. Abyss. Really, I apologize for wasting your time.”
Abyss just waved his hand dismissively, as if it was no big deal. He pulled a sleek, black card holder from his coat pocket, slid out a single, gold-stamped business card, and pushed it across the table toward Emmy with two fingers. “It’s nothing personal. I actually respect your boldness, Ms. Lincoln. Here’s my personal card. If you ever hit a cash flow snag, or if you change your mind and want to share the risk, just give me a call. Who knows, maybe we could work together someday.”
The card was as minimalist as it gets. Just the word “Abyss” and a phone number, no other details.
Emmy glanced at it but didn’t reach for it. “Sorry,” she said, lifting her gaze, her eyes cool and distant. “Since we’re both in this field, that makes us competitors. I doubt there’ll be any real chance to work together.”
Abyss arched an eyebrow. For a split second, something shadowy flickered in his eyes, but it vanished as quickly as it came. He pulled the card back, slipped it into his pocket, and stood up, smoothing a collar that didn’t even have a wrinkle.
“Seems like you’ve got some issues with me, Ms. Lincoln.” He looked down at her, a half-smile on his lips, as if he knew something she didn’t. “And I don’t think it’s just about me almost taking your project. You’ve been giving me the cold shoulder since the moment you walked in.”
Emmy stood up too. She wasn’t as tall as him, but her presence was just as strong. She met his gaze, not missing a single shift in his expression. Smiling, she said, “Not really. You just remind me of someone from the past. Someone I can’t stand.”
“Emmy!”
John came hurrying back, practically bouncing with excitement. “Oh my god, Emmy! You’re really an investor? I can’t believe I’ve been working with a secret big shot this whole time!”
Emmy grabbed her thermos and headed over to the water cooler. “Would I lie to you?”
John was almost vibrating with energy, his eyes shining with hope. “This is amazing! So, when are you going to officially invest? When can we get this project started?”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
