Emmy took a sip of warm water, letting it soothe her dry throat. “No rush. Let’s wait until the older team members get back from Hawaii before we talk about it.” She set her cup down and looked at the group. “Actually, I wanted to run something by you all. I’d like to bring the whole team on board at Janus Sphere Technologies. You’d all get a great salary and would only have to focus on brain-computer interface research. As for the rest—funding, PR, daily operations—I’ll handle all of it.”
John’s reaction was impossible to miss. His eyes practically sparkled with excitement. In the research world, investors usually liked to take over, bringing in their own managers and turning everything upside down. Suddenly, people who didn’t know the first thing about the work would start calling the shots, and the science would get lost in the chaos. Sometimes, things got even worse, with investors stealing the results for themselves.
But Emmy was different. She wanted to protect her team, making sure they stayed the ones in charge, free to do their work the way they knew best. Plus, they all knew each other already, and teamwork came naturally. Emmy was exactly the kind of boss people dreamed about.
John, still grinning, whipped out his phone. “I’ll call Harlene and the others right now. We need to get everyone back as soon as possible and talk about this.”
Emmy reached out and gently pressed his phone back down. “Hold on. Let them unwind a little. Everyone’s been exhausted, rushing to hit deadlines. They finally have a real break. Don’t ruin it for them.”
She paused, her eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief. “Besides, I’ve got New Year’s gifts for everyone, but they won’t be here for a few more days. So, I need you to keep all this quiet for now—including the part where I’m the investor. When everyone gets back, I want it to be a surprise.”
John looked at her, his gaze full of gratitude, respect, and something a little softer. “Emmy, meeting you is honestly the luckiest thing that’s ever happened to me.”
Emmy just smiled and turned to look out the window. Snow was falling again, soft and steady. She wondered if it was cold in Southeast Asia, too.
Emmy shook her head. “Not yet. I’ve got a few more things to wrap up here. I might need to go to Fiji next.”
Krystina nodded, understanding right away. The Fiji resort was about to open, after all, and Emmy was a director. Of course she was busy. “Alright. Just stay safe, and let us know if you need anything.”
Emmy leaned back, studying them both. “Okay, what’s going on with you two today? You haven’t even looked at each other, let alone spoken. To anyone else, you’d look like sworn enemies.”
She raised her eyebrows, a teasing smile spreading across her face as she glanced at Krystina. “Are you two trying to keep things professional in front of me? If it’s for work, there’s really no need. Starlight Corporation doesn’t care about that kind of thing. Work is work, but your personal lives matter, too. I don’t mind office romances, as long as you don’t let it mess with the job.”

What I was dreading the most just happened, I think I need to move on from this story and read something else. This story is breaking my heart....

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
