Penny stood off to the side, watching her mistress fall apart in silence. The sight hurt her, though she didn’t really know how to help. She was rough around the edges, never good at comforting anyone. After struggling for a bit, Penny finally blurted out, “Ma’am, James is tough. He’s not going down that easy.”
That word—down—hit Emmy like a slap.
Her fear, which she’d tried so hard to hold back, crashed over her all at once. She covered her face with both hands and the tears, hot and wild, spilled out before she could stop them. Her body curled in, shoulders shaking so hard it almost hurt, and soft, broken sobs slipped through her fingers. The pain was sharp, as if someone had reached inside her and tried to rip her heart right out of her chest.
She couldn’t let herself imagine the possibility. A world without him. A future where she would never again hear his deep, husky voice say her name. The thought was unbearable.
She started to hate herself. Why hadn’t she watched him a little longer? Why hadn’t she told him, really told him, that she’d wait for him to come home? Why hadn’t she… found a way to keep him by her side?
Every second crawled by, each one stretching longer than the last, like time had slowed just to torture her.
Just when she thought the darkness was going to swallow her whole, chaos erupted at the end of the hallway. A doctor in a white coat came running, breathless and shouting, “They’re back! The Dragonscale team is back!”
“The helicopter’s almost here! Emergency crew, get ready!”
The news lit up the whole wounded soldiers’ area, snapping everyone out of their daze.
“Dragonscale is back?!”
“Knew it. Those maniacs are too stubborn to die!”
No matter how badly they were hurt, the soldiers started moving, some limping on crutches, some leaning on each other, all trying to get closer. The ones who couldn’t walk dragged themselves to the windows, pressing their faces against the glass.
Emmy sat frozen for a beat, then suddenly jerked into action. She tried to stand, but her knees nearly gave out. She stumbled, almost falling.
“Ma’am!” Penny rushed to catch her.
But Emmy shook her off, half falling, half running down the stairs. She raced to the edge of the helipad, stopping just outside the security line.
There were ropes strung up now, guards with rifles keeping everyone back. Doctors and nurses waited inside, a long row of stretchers lined up and ready. It was obvious the Dragonscale squad hadn’t come back unscathed.

chapter 1251 has no wording, just the chapter number...
What I was dreading the most just happened, I think I need to move on from this story and read something else. This story is breaking my heart....
CHAPTER 1220 HAS NO WORDING JUST THE CHAPTER NUMBER...
Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
I enjoy reading this. I like that the storyline isn’t drawn out and moves on. I also appreciate chapters being added almost everyday, thank you....
