After sitting with Abriella in the hallway for a while, Emmy made her way to the logistics office. As soon as she stepped inside, a handful of young soldiers, busy moving supplies, immediately paused what they were doing.
“Hey, ma’am!”
“Ma’am, what brings you here? Do you need anything?”
The logistics chief hurried over, a wide, sincere smile on his face. The way they greeted her was open and respectful, not just because she was James’s girlfriend, but because she’d recently used her own money to donate a batch of winter gear that had honestly warmed everyone’s hearts.
Emmy smiled. “No official business, just wanted to borrow the kitchen for a bit. I want to cook something for James.”
“Of course, that’s no problem!” the chief said, his voice booming as he waved his hand. “Ma’am, go ahead and use whatever you need. We just restocked the cold room, so the veggies and meat are all fresh.”
Emmy thanked him and headed into the kitchen. Penny stayed by the door, wide-eyed as she watched her boss roll up her sleeves and get to work. Emmy rinsed the rice, washed and chopped vegetables and meat, all with a kind of practiced ease that left Penny in awe.
In her mind, Emmy was a top AI scholar, someone who belonged in a lab, not a kitchen. Seeing her like this, quietly tending to a bubbling pot, felt almost unreal.
But right now, Emmy was deep into making braised pork belly. The hot oil sizzled, and each piece of pork tumbled in the pan, turning golden and crisp at the edges. She poured in her homemade sauce, letting the caramelized sugar coat every piece of meat until they shimmered red and glossy. The smell was mouthwatering.
Next to her, in a clay pot, fat juicy meatballs simmered away, the broth bubbling softly. Emmy paused and then pulled out a pack of mushrooms, cleaning and prepping them. James had been out in the field for days, living rough, probably without a proper meal. She figured something too heavy might upset his stomach, so she made a light mushroom soup as well. She also quickly blanched a plate of bok choy, leaving it bright green and crisp.
About half an hour later, everything was ready. Emmy plated up two servings, then waved Penny over to the little folding table by the window.
Afterward, Emmy packed up a serving and brought it to the ICU. Abriella was still there, sitting silently like she was carved from stone. Emmy didn’t say much, just set the lunchbox down beside her and gave her shoulder a gentle pat before heading back to the break room.
She waited for James, tidying up her work as the night wore on. The hallway stayed quiet. Drowsiness crept in, and Emmy couldn’t help but yawn. She rested her head on the desk, burying her face in her arms.
Just as she was drifting off, she heard the faint click of the door lock turning.
Emmy snapped upright.
The door swung open, and James strode in, tall and broad, bringing with him a rush of cold winter air.
