Emmy jumped up from her chair, caught off guard.
James closed the door behind him, still in the uniform he’d worn when he left. His heavy military coat hugged his tall, solid frame and his training cap was pulled low over his brow. The brim cast a shadow over his eyes, leaving only the sharp line of his jaw and those tightly pressed lips visible. The coat looked bulky on anyone else, but on him, it just made him seem even more powerful, his broad shoulders and slim waist giving off an energy that filled the whole room.
She’d seen him dressed like this earlier in the hallway, but under the bright lights of the break room, Emmy couldn’t help but feel a little dazed. He looked so incredibly masculine.
Before she could snap out of it, James crossed the room in just a few strides. He tossed his cap onto the table, then reached out and pulled her right into his arms.
“Sorry I kept you waiting.” His voice was low and a little rough, but there was a warmth in it that made her feel instantly safe. The cold fabric of his coat brushed her cheek, sending a shiver through her and snapping her back to reality.
She quickly wriggled out of his embrace and tugged him over to the radiator. “You’re freezing. Come on, warm up over here.”
She pushed him down into a chair by the heat, her voice full of worry and urgency. “Sit here and don’t move. Wait for me, I’ll be right back.”
Without waiting for an answer, she turned and hurried out. James watched her leave, a little confused, but he shrugged off his coat and draped it over the chair, then leaned in closer to the radiator. The warmth started to make him feel a little sleepy.
