“Slow down, no one’s taking your food.” Emmy nudged the bowl of white rice and the mushroom soup closer to him. “Don’t just go for the meat. Eat some rice, have some soup, let it settle.”
James listened and slowed down, picking up the soup bowl and drinking a few big gulps. The hot broth slid down his throat, warming him up from the inside out. He could feel the heat all the way to his eyes.
“Emmy.” He put down the bowl and looked at her, his eyes a little red. “This is the best meal I’ve had in months.” He gave her a soft look. “It’s just... really good to have you here.”
His words were so direct, Emmy felt her nose sting. She quickly bowed her head to hide her watery eyes and shoved the plate of meatballs closer to him. “If you like it, eat more. It’s all yours.”
James didn’t hold back. He polished off the braised pork and meatballs, making quick work of everything, not even leaving a drop of sauce. Finally, his fork reached for the plate of crisp green bok choy, but he was obviously slowing down.
Emmy knew he was a total carnivore and couldn’t help but tease, “If you don’t like veggies, you don’t have to force yourself.”
James just kept a straight face and stuffed the bok choy into his mouth, chewing a couple times before swallowing. He finished off the whole plate. Setting his fork down, he smiled, satisfied. “Anything you make tastes good.”
Emmy found herself smiling too, without even thinking about it.
When James finished eating, he didn’t let Emmy do a thing. He quickly cleared the table and took the dishes out. By the time he came back, about ten minutes had passed. Emmy was sitting in front of her laptop, eyes glued to the screen.
